Reel Weekends: Contagion

Posted on January 3, 2012 by jackie

spacer Happy New Year everyone!

This week, I am not going to feature any Christmas related movie for this week’s Reel Weekends, instead, I’ll be featuring a different movie entitled CONTAGION. It is a movie about a threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak. Among the casts are Jude Law, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, and a whole lot more.

This movie could somehow relate to the present scenario here in the Philippines, particularly here in Cagayan de Oro City wherein people are threatened with the disease called leptospirosos which is said to be primarily brought by the flood. It is also said to be contagious especially for those people who have an open wounds.

Leptospirosis is transmitted by the urine of an infected animal and is contagious as long as it is still moist. Although rats, mice and moles are important primary hosts, a wide range of other mammals including dogs, deer, rabbits, hedgehogs, cows, sheep, raccoons, opossums, skunks, and certain marine mammals are able to carry and transmit the disease as secondary hosts. Dogs may lick the urine of an infected animal off the grass or soil, or drink from an infected puddle. There have been reports of “house dogs” contracting leptospirosis apparently from licking the urine of infected mice that entered the house. The type of habitats most likely to carry infective bacteria are muddy riverbanks, ditches, gullies, and muddy livestock rearing areas where there is regular passage of either wild or farm mammals. There is a direct correlation between the amount of rainfall and the incidence of leptospirosis, making it seasonal in temperate climates and year-round in tropical climates (Wikipedia)

Having contagious disease will cause the people to get panicked that any symptoms of it will caused some people to get paranoid.

Watch Contagion Trailer now.

If you haven’t watched this film yet, you better grab a DVD-copy now.

1st/366 BPC: Thought To Ponder: Thinking of Getting Even To Those Who Offended You?

Posted on January 1, 2012 by jackie

Getting even to those who have severely offended us might be our initial reaction when we felt like we’re being emotionally, mentally or physically tortured. During my early years, I’ve experienced what it feels like being oppressed with my very own relatives. I’ve been treated like a slave by those people whom I have never expected to be that mean to me considering that we have the same blood lines. At my tender age, I used to swear to myself that someday, they will pay back all the rude treatment they have given to me…

But, it turns out the other way…

When I was out of their custody already, I forgot those feeling. I do not know how it did happen. I was just so thankful that I am back to my family- my very own family. I forgot those things that I swore to myself. I didn’t ask God to take it away from me, it just simply slipped out of my mind- totally gone.

Time heals, I supposed. But of course, all those things that I’ve been through are still so vivid on my mind. But what’s so amazing is that I can face them with a sincere smile when I met them again, as if nothing happened in the past. The hatred was gone. I felt the same thing to my father who was the reason of all the miseries that I’ve been through. I used to hate him, blame him of everything. But God’s faithfulness in my life teach me to forget all those things. To consider it all as just a thing from the past… I don’t need to look back in order to reminisce all the pains and hatred that I felt once in my life. God’s mercy and unconditional love are able to sustain me to let go of the past and face the future with positive outlook in life. God has His own way of putting all things into order. He pick up all the torn pieces on me and made me whole again- that alone made me so grateful enough to Him. His words in Romans 12:17-19 is so real… Yes, indeed! we should live at peace with anyone- even to those who have severely offended us. So, are you thinking of getting even to those who have offended you? THINK AGAIN.

“Never pay back evil to anyone. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do your part to live in peace with everyone, as much as possible. Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God. For it is written, “I will take vengeance; I will repay those who deserve it,” says the Lord.”
Romans 12:17-19 NLT

WFW: Last Days of the Year…

Posted on December 28, 2011 by jackie

spacer Few more days and another year will unfold…

So, how’s your year 2011?

Well, for some of us, it might be a year of abundance, for others, it might be a year of losses… If we try to assess the whole year, I am pretty sure we will come up with different results.

Regardless of what we’ve been through, let us face the New Year with new perspective in life. If we failed this year, then it’s not yet the end of everything. We still have all the chance to conquer our failures as long as we live.

Let us put off all those excess baggage behind us. We should not allow those burdens to hamper us in having a prosperous New Year. I’ve been through  a lot this year. I admit, I am not good in dealing with pressures as well as with my emotions. My patience is limited and most often I easily get discouraged. That is among the things that I need to resolve before the year ends. I also admit, I am not good in keeping promises. So I cannot really promise that I could do away with those negative attitude. But at least I will do my best to do so.

Year 2012 would be a great challenge for me. I am going to be a Mom soon (Me and my hubby are so excited for Jeush’ arrival spacer . I still need to learn a lot of things but that’s okay because according to my sisters, knowing those motherhood thing are women’s instinct. As of now I enjoyed buying stuff for my baby. I can always feel his movement from time to time as if he too can’t wait to see the world outside my tummy.

May God bless my family for the coming year. I pray for a safe and normal delivery. I also pray for more blessings, a new job for my hubby, and a secured future for all of us. I know God sees all our needs for HE is  is in total control.

So, spend your last days of 2011 by thanking everything that you’ve been through (whether good or bad because His Word says we need to give thanks in ALL circumstances- 1 Thessalonians 5: 18)

Happy New Year everyone!

Who’s To Blame?

Posted on December 27, 2011 by jackie

As I was browsing for FB updates lately, the Sendong Aftermath never ceases yet. There are still continuous updates from FB friends. I was disheartened with the fact that one of my previous students who worked at Baungon, Bukidnon was still missing. He was on duty at NAPOCOR when Tropical Storm Sendong strikes. Just in case yo have an information, please care to share. It is my prayer that he survived and he is okay right now.spacer What caught my attention the most was a link shared by an FB friend. It was  a piece of an article posted in a nationwide circulation under the commentary section written by a native Kagay-anon, Mr. Antonio J. Montalvan II. I knew only a few about Cagayan de Oro but this man has a lot to say about this devastated city and he even knew about Cagayan River and its anticipated fury…

Wanna know who’s to blame?
