This Tablet is not that costly but it works

June 23rd 2011 00:00
Now that i have time to write again, I thought I better revisit the content of one of my previous posts here in Orble about the Tablet computer. At that time I wrote it, I said a couple of things like: it cannot replace the old desktop and laptop computers as work horses, it could be very fragile with a 10 inch screen as it is just half a notebook or a laptop, that I would probably go for one that has a smaller and sturdier built, if at all.

Well, I finally got one about a month or so ago. It has a 7inch screen, a wifi and 3G capability made possible by a sim card slot. It is not your expensive variety but it supports an sd card up to 32 gigabyte, it comes with a removable battery that works up to about 10 hours and it has a camera that takes both still pics and videos.

It is an Android. Actually, a phone which works as a tablet, or a tablet that works like a phone. It makes and sends text messages and makes and receives phone calls. But given the press I've read since I've got my unit, it is not yet that popular.

So far the only stories I saw about it on the net (without specifically searching for them) was the original story and its rehashed version published by Bloomberg about how this giant Chinese electonics company is promoting its product via Facebook and Twitter which are said to be both banned in China.

Don't hold your breaths now, I am talking about ZTE's 7inch Android tablet called V9 light. At least, that is how it is called here in the Philippines.

Obviously, I am not talking about the Rockstar of all the gizmos but this thing has so far enabled me to connect to the net via 3G and wifi nicely, check the weather complete with weather satellite pics., read and send emails with attachments, and while my unit does not support flash I was able to watch videos in it - I mean, videos other than the ones recorded by the unit itself.

But whats really nice about this tablet is the way it was handed to me by the sales clerk of the cell phone service provider that carries it in this country. Before finally parting with the unit, the sales clerk explained that this phone/tablet connects to the internet automatically.

Now, sharing that knowledge with me is important because it does not only tell me that I wont have any problem connecting to the net even when I am not in a wifi hot zone, but because it also told me that since I am on a postpaid plan, I better be careful with the apps that I am installing in it because some of the apps, on their own, seek internet connection and uses it without the tablet owners knowledge.

And this is true with many mobile apps. They may seem cool to me as end user but in reality, they actually work more for the service providers than the consumers.

Their presence in the phone/tablet could result to huge bills for a usage that, as the owner of the tablet, I may not be aware I have consumed.

That same knowledge made me look closely into the units settings and guess what I found? I can actually switch on and off the data service on the phone/tablet! Hmmmwhy was it that I was not given the same information on the last smart phone that I had?

Well, I am not sure if all units are made with the same settings but if your phone/tablet does not have it, this one has.

Here's a pic of my unit.

A GIFT NOT A TRAP

December 11th 2010 00:00

Illustration pic source: Wikipedia

Christmas is just around the bend, once again, so I suppose a gift idea is not a bad contribution to a world that is about to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Almost a year ago, I had a not so crazy idea of giving myself a gift.

It was one of the latest electronic gadgets available at the time, an expensive popular smart phone, but it will not cost me anything. It was free! All I needed to do was to take it.

I did, thinking that I cant go wrong with something like that. Well, I was wrong. I ended up spending an amount that I was not willing to part with. Not because it was something that I cannot afford, but because I felt cheated.

I ranted about it in one of my previous posts here in Orble, but a friend told me that was about all I can do about it since the guys who gave me the free phone can easily prove that I used the service they were charging me for. He said the phone was automatically set to do that and it was up to the clients to turn off that service.

A stupid thing, because who would know how to switch off something that he didnt know was switched on? (Hey, I am the kind of guy who reads brochures and literatures that comes with the unit.) It was like a trap, and before I knew it, I already have the biggest monthly phone bill ever in my entire life!

Well, if I have money to spend for gifts this Christmas, I will not be buying traps or electronic Trojan Horses that will drain the finances of my recipients.

So, my gift idea this Christmas has almost the same frills as your expensive tablet (Ipad or smart phones) but it will not burn a hole in your pockets and it, most definitely, will not be connecting to the internet on its own and run a huge bill that you are not aware of.

It is that thumbnail displayed with this post. If you didnt recognize it, its an Archos 70. A 7 inch internet tablet that runs on Android software (froyo), with high resolution touch sceen, and it is said to have access to thousands of apps. It has wifi and Bluetooth 2.1 but best of all, it doesnt have a 3G feature.

Why is an internet thingy that does not have 3G feature a good thing?

Well, I can only speak for myself. To me, it is good because I dont want some pseudo-respectable companies putting one over me. I have a 3G phone with Bluetooth anyway. Archos 70 has Bluetooth, wifi and supports 3G tethering. Theres nothing like knowing when you are spending money on some internet connections.

Why a 7 inch screen? Because it is a tablet my dear fellas, not a table.

Sure, it is not an Ipad but I am not really into buying names. I go for functionality. This one does almost practically the same things, its of the right size and it comes at about half the price.

Heres a caveat, everything I know about this gadget I only got from reading about it on the net. I wanted to have a look at it and buy one, but it is not readily available in the Philippines at this time. I wonder why

But I reckon, it is really worth checking out.

HOW ABOUT AN iPDA?

April 10th 2010 00:00

Sorry guys, but I cant get excited over that latest Apple toy - the Ipad. As far as I am concerned, the biggest turn-off for the Ipad is its size.

Wifi internet router

To the real techy guys, the idea of setting up a WiFi internet router is like breathing. You know, an effortless function that requires nothing, or it could be just like walking (without thinking where to go) just putting one foot after the other

HOW ABOUT AN HD CAMCORDER FOR A GIFT?

December 19th 2009 02:07
Well, you know me. I am not the kind of guy who would encourage people to buy anything beyond their means and start another worldwide economic collapse.

Oh, okay, we are just talking about a High Definition video camcorder
