It's Sew Emma: A New Quilt Pattern Website from Fat Quarter Shop
Friday, 10 February 2012 03:00

spacer

One of the original sponsors of Sew4Home was Fat Quarter Shop, and they are still a passionate supporter. So, when we heard late last year, that Kimberly and her creative crew had a new quilt pattern line and website, we were thrilled for them. It's Sew Emma has several months under its belt now and a wonderful inventory of both paper and PDF patterns. We picked out FIVE of their best-sellers and are excited to be able to send a bundle o' patterns to THREE lucky Sew4Home fans.

Cotton Candy Kitty Is the Purrrfect Valentine's Pal
Thursday, 09 February 2012 03:00

Cotton Candy Kitty is asking so nicely, how could you say "no" to her Valentine's request? This is a fast and easy project... even if you've never tried a stuffed animal before. We found the Minky Double-Sided Cuddle Fleece from our friends at Minky Delight surprisingly easy to work with. It's very forgiving, and a third of a yard is enough to make three little kittens. I bet you know at least three folks who could use a Valentine's Day hug from a cute little kitty like this.

Sew What You Love by Tanya Whelen: Book Review & Giveaway
Wednesday, 08 February 2012 03:00

Here at Sew4Home, we love the vintage vibe. It might be the quaint illustration of a chubby-cheeked toddler, a glimpse of gingham on a wicker porch swing's pillow or a floral bouquet dense with pastel petals. Whenever, wherever we catch the vibe, we want to drink it down like a cool glass of sun tea on the first warm day of spring. So, it's no surprise we've been eager followers of Tanya Whelan and her Grand Revival fabric collections for Free Spirit Fabric. When Tanya contacted us last month to let us know her very first book was hot off the press, we were happy to take a look. Read on to find out more... and to enter to win your very own copy of Sew What You Love.

The World Sews
Tuesday, 07 February 2012 03:00

Three years ago, when we started Sew4Home, we had no idea how many connections we would make with people around the globe. Sure, we expected to link up across the USA, but it wasn't long before we discovered we had friends in over 200 countries. Realizing what we design in our studio in Portland, Oregon ends up being made by people around the world is an amazing and wonderful thing. When we get an email or see a comment from someone on the other side of the planet that says "I just finished sewing your apron…" it makes all the hard work worthwhile. We often say: people who sew are some of the nicest, most generous people you will ever meet.

Petite Purse in Maman & Nursery Basics From Cloud9 Organic

At just 5" square, our teeny tiny purse might seem like the perfect little girl accessory, and indeed it would be. However, the 2012 fashion runway trends are showing little purses like this on big girls as well. In fact, our 'big girl' model dubbed it the perfect size for a night on the town, just right to hold a bit of make up, cards and cash. We combined three soft peachy-pink prints from two of Cloud9 Fabric's newest Premium Organic Collections: Nursery Basics and Maman. The easy-to-use frame is just like the ones you'd find on a little coin purse.

Vintage Shoulder Dust Covers
Wednesday, 01 February 2012 03:00

spacer

During a recent clean-up, my sister came across a hand-embroidered shoulder dust cover our grandmother had made for our mother. I think that officially qualifies as 'vintage'! We both thought it was not only beautiful, but a great idea. We all have special clothing in our closet we may not wear often, but certainly don't want to give away. A whole garment bag seems like overkill if you need easy access to the outfit, yet you still would like to protect it between wearings. Our Shoulder Dust Cover is just right to keep dust and debris from settling along the shoulders of your special garments. Thanks, Grandma! I always knew you were super cool and ahead of your time.

Big Sister Dolly Quilt in Maman & Nursery Basics From Cloud9 Organic
Tuesday, 31 January 2012 03:00

One of my favorite "new baby traditions" is the practice of bringing the siblings of a new baby little gifts to also make them feel special. That is the idea behind our adorable Big Sister Dolly Quilt. We used the scraps from yesterday's Beautiful Baby Quilt to create a matching 14" x 18" blanket the perfect size for a doll bed. The center patchwork is made up of 2" x 2" squares, which were sized to be a perfect showcase for the pretty little motifs of our Cloud9 Maman fabric.

Beautiful Baby Quilt in Maman & Nursery Basics from Cloud9 Organic

Organic cottons have come a long way over the last several years, and one of the companies leading the pack has been Cloud9. We discovered them a couple years ago, and have watched with delight as their new designs emerged. If you believe organic fabric means dull, drab or coarse... meet Cloud9 co-founders Michelle Engel Bencsko and Gina Pantastico. They have infused their lines with happy colors and delightful patterns from the rich tones of Nature Walk to the forthy fun of My Happy Nursery. And they've done it all using 100% certified organic cotton in the manufacturing of their base cloths and eco-responsible low impact dyes. Two of their newest collections are featured today in our Beautiful Baby Quilt: Maman and Nursery Basics. This fabric was an absolute delight to work with. The base fabric is a premium 200 count organic cotton sheeting with an amazing feel that is both crisp and silky soft.

Love That Fabric: Pretty Pre-Cuts
Friday, 27 January 2012 03:00

spacer

Often, when I first get up in the morning, I like to enjoy my coffee while browsing fabric at some of my favorite online sources. Seeing what's new and what's coming gives me inspiration for future Sew4Home projects. Sometimes, I have a design in mind and search for the perfect fabric. Sometimes I see fabric and it spurs a project idea. A few weeks ago, we made a wonderful and amazingly easy patchwork throw from Circa 1934 by BasicGrey for Moda using a layer cake containing forty-two 10-inch squares. It went together so quickly, I thought I would make up a few for three upcoming gift-giving events. I have one I keep by my computer. It keeps me warm and I don't feel a need to notch up the heat to overcome the morning chill. I'm sure that throw has more than paid for itself in reduced heat bills! Today, I'll show you what I've picked for my three easy-to-make gift throws while browsing at Fat Quarter Shop. This is a frequent stop for me, and a fabulous source for pre-cuts.
