About J.C.’s Mufflers & Brakes

J.C.’s Mufflers & Brakes opened its doors in September 1983 with four bays, two techs, and hope for a successful future. Jerome Cain started the business, as it was always his dream while he worked for Walker Manufacturing for over 20 years.

In 1990, an addition to the building doubled the number of bays and the size of the storage area. Jerry Cain and his crew worked hard and the business was successful.

By 2003, Jerry wanted to spend more time in Florida on the golf course, so the business was sold to Bob and Kristine Carlson. Bob had been at J.C.’s since its inception, having been hired to work only part time during the startup putting up racking for storage. This part time, temporary job turned into a 20-year full time job as technician and manager for the shop.

Taking over J.C.’s was the “risk of a lifetime” for the Carlsons as the trend in automotive repair had changed and the exhaust business was in a downturn. Bob used his knowledge and experience, adding new products and services, hiring more experienced technicians, upgrading technology, and looking always for for new ways to enhance the already solid reputation Jerry Cain had built from the beginning.

Currently, we have four full time technicians and two part time clerical positions. Bob is a hands-on business owner, often doing oil changes and exhaust work when needed. Kristine does the accounting, working out of her home office, and filling in at the shop office when needed.

As one of Racine’s few locally-owned auto repair service shops, J.C.’s Mufflers & Brakes continues to be a success. We believe our customer service must always be top-notch, and we strive daily to make sure the sound reputation we have built in Racine will remain strong in the years to come. Bob and Kristine believe that J.C.’s Mufflers & Brakes can be the largest locally-owned repair shop in Wisconsin!
