{recipe} All-Natural Pink Milk For Your Little Sweetie

spacer

Pink milk (overloaded with sugar, fillers and artificial color) at school (where it is an option everyday) = bad news.

Pink milk (homemade with three all-natural ingredients) at home (where it is a special treat) = good news.

Really good news. And the perfect hue for a Valentine’s Day surprise.

{kitchen aids} Why I never buy chicken breasts + Quickest Five Spice Cutlets

spacer

Before children, other than the occasional Sunday roasted bird, I’d all but stopped eating chicken. I ate out more frequently than I do now and restaurant chicken rarely excites. Then, at home, when I cooked meat, I was much more interested in roasting legs of lamb, braising osso bucco, and slow cooking or crisping hunks of pork. But, alas, with children came chicken.

It doesn’t have to be that way. I encourage you to make lamb burgers and carnitas, serve proscuitto and chorizo. See what happens! But despite my willingness to change it up and also the fact that I limit meat to 3x’s a week, I still find myself cooking chicken. Often.

If you’re in the same boat, allow me to share my most important tip on cooking chicken: forget chicken breasts.

It’s crazy that it’s taken me over a week to share this with you given how excited I am (what can I say, I was lounging on a beach this time last week): I’ve joined the Cool Mom Picks team!!

That’s right mamas and papas, I’ll be posting niblets of food-related coolness on Cool Mom Picks every Wednesday. And I couldn’t be more delighted.

Cool Mom Picks is one of my all-time favorite sites. It’s chock full of finds scouted by smart ladies with savvy, good taste and serious wit. I’m sure that you already visit Cool Mom Picks and now you have yet another reason to visit or—even better—subscribe to the CMP newsletter so that you don’t miss a thing.

Up today, 6 Valentine’s Day lunchbox ideas made with extra love. And you know me—you can count on these lunchbox treats being a healthier way of saying “I love you” than those sugary candy hearts.

{cauliflower custard recipe} Custard Is the New Puree, But Better

spacer

Puree is not my favorite word. Unless printed on the menu of a five star joint, it pretty much sends anyone who isn’t in the throes of feeding a barely-toothed child running. And, really, that’s too bad. Because, though it’s true that purees can easily be shared with babies, they are not necessarily baby food.

What’s the difference?

Pear, Almond and Plum puree with Cardamaom, which makes a mean grown-up breakfast mixed into Greek yogurt. (Guaranteed better than any fruit-on-the-bottom stuff.)

Mint and Cantaloupe puree that makes delicious pops.

Coconut Coriander Carrots that are a more delicious side dish than makes sense. Truly—this puree is so delicious it’s almost weird.

Cauliflower Puree that, swirled with browned butter, would kick mashed potatoe’s butt if mashed potato had a butt.

And I could go on. (Really, I could—see?!)

But, still, I know, purees, especially vegetable purees, can be inexplicably unappetizing, at least in theory. I think that it might just be the word. I say call it a “mash” and move on. If that doesn’t work, though, here’s my new trick: turn it into a custard!

{parenting} PIZZA PARTY!

spacer

Writing about the hungry boy’s 5th birthday earlier this week made me realize that I never shared his birthday party from last year. While I’m aware that writing a blog + being a mom does not require me to share every milestone, last year’s birthday party was relevant. It was a food-themed party that worked really well and I think you’ll like hearing about it. I also hope that it inspires some ideas that’ll help with your kiddo’s birthday, especially if your crumbsnatcher is an inveterate food-lover like my guy.

{recipe} Weeknight Udon with Quick Vegetarian Dashi

spacer

I’m so pooped. I’ve woken up every day that has passed since learning that the hungry baby is clear of a bone tumor thinking that I’ll finally feel recharged. Instead, I feel more tired. Like deep down in my bones tired. Like I spent my entire reserve of energy—and then some—keeping it together through the holidays while a black cloud loomed above. And now that the skies have cleared, I’m free to be done. Just—DONE. As it turns out, the Hungry Papa feels the same.

Two depleted parents + two rambunctious little boys = need for an emergency plan to high tail it out of town. So in a rare, last-minute play, the Hungry Papa and I are going to the beach. Alone. On Monday. (This Monday!) This will be the first time we’ve spent more than 24 hours without children in two years.

Sayonara hungry boys. Mama and Papa are going somewhere really beautiful to sleep for four days.

In the meantime, I’m focusing on keeping things copacetic at home. For the dinner table, that means dishing up healthy, quick and easy meals like with this Weeknight Udon made with Quick Vegetarian Dashi.
