Every year, billions of single use chopsticks are relegated to landfills in China, resulting in what some estimate to be a loss of 25 million trees and bamboo plants. As a result of this waste, one designer found that if these chopsticks are cleaned and sanitized at a high enough temperature, functional items can be produced from what would otherwise be trash.
This large basket is made exclusively from chopsticks that have gone through this process. Much more versatile than typcial wicker baskets, this basket is not just for attractively displaying kitchen fruit. The natural ability of bamboo to withstand high temperatures allows it to be used as colander that can easily be folded up to save counter and cabinet space.
When used to display fruit, the chopsticks allow for enough air flow to keep fruits (or vegetables) fresh much longer than the alternatives.
