The charm of the area known as Nulu just keeps getting better. A recently aired video Travel Now: Louisville Kentucky by ABC News distinguishes Nulu as “the newest hippest neighborhood” in Louisville. Locals have known that for a long time, but it’s nice to get some national attention. Add another page to your note app and type in “new Louisville bike rack in front of the Green Building. Official unveiling during First Friday Trolley Hop (Jan 6).” That’s right. Louisville is adding another unique landmark to take your picture in front of.

Jacob Heustis, "As the Old Crow Flies" bike rack

The rack is titled As the Old Crow Flies and local artist Jacob Heustis designed and constructed the sculpture out of oak bourbon barrels and steel. It resembles one of those old make shift sign posts with multiple directional arrows alerting travelers to significant city/country destinations. Nulu mogul Gill Holland conceived the idea of creating a marker that would show the distance “as the crow flies” from the Nulu area to the distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to help promote Louisville as the “Gateway to Bourbon Country.” Heustis sourced barrels from Four Roses, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve and then burned each of the distilleries names and emblems into the wood since the barrels are unmarked. The sculpture’s aged steel and honey toned distressed wood fits in very nicely with the rustic rejuvenated aesthetic of East Market.

In conjunction with the bike rack unveiling, Heustis will be showing two-dimensional works inside the Green Building gallery from 5 – 9 p.m. This exhibit is for one night only and will be on view during the Trolley Hop.
