    Damn it's been too long

I get so caught up in work that I often neglect to check in here. I'm apologizing about that!  I'm back afer a few weeks in New Zealand, which sucks up all my time not only during the trip but for the weeks prior and, as it looks, most of the week after my return.

Before you ask, new Zealand was great. A young wine industry but one that has made huge advances in a very brief time. I expect we'll be hearing some great things from them and I am especially excited by Waipara, a read more...

I read through the list and it looks like I have tried 10 of the wines on there and have another 3 in my cellar.  Plus a bunch of them on my "wish list."  Like, I wish I had enough money to buy those bottles!  Seriously, there are some wines under 50 bucks a bottle on the list that I will step up to the plate and buy in the next 12 months.

5 delicious ways to please your valentine

Okay, now you’re in trouble. Valentine’s is right around the corner and you’ve yet to score your coveted reservation. What a huge problem! Or is it?

Based on my many years of experience in the biz, I have to say that people who go out for a Valentine’s Day dinner are generally regarded as suckers! Pay big bucks for a hurried, fixed menu dinner that’s overpriced and underwhelming. Is this really the best way to tell someone you love them? Heck no!

502203Dick Krueger We'll probably start with a couple glasses of a nice Champagne; then have half-bottle of a Barbera or Dolcetto with our starters, followed by a full bottle of Barbaresco or Barolo with our main courses. Then if we have dessert, we pick something that goes with it.

89065Gregory Dal Piaz Hi Dick, That's a nice plan. Sounds like my kind of dinner. Let us know how it goes!

847804EMark Valentine's Day is, generally, not a big occassion in our household. (We've been married for 35 years. So, I don't think either of us need any advice.) However, I just realized how incongruous our plans are, this year. After my wife's drawing class on Tuesday, we are going to drive up to the Tehachapi Mountains to spend a few days with two gay guys at their cabin. Believe me, the date is coincidental. Not your classic romantic getaway plan, but I guarantee that I will go into the cellar to pick out some good wines to share. Oh, and I did save off both the fig recipes. They sound great.

111930Roadrunner And the steak recipe is located....where?

89065Gregory Dal Piaz I just fixed the link to the steak recipe. Apologies for the error of not including it originally.

111930Roadrunner Thank you for the quick fix (to the link)! I"ll be doing the cooking this Valentine's Day but, to date, I'm only well prepared with wine - and a few ideas. Married for 48 years - but still need all the advice that I can get (sometimes, it's nice being a slow learner).

2012 Anderson Valley Alsace Varietals Festival: February 18, Boonville, CA

    From Vinography
Based on what you read about in the paper, magazines, etc, you'd think that pretty much the only wines that California produces are Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Oh yeah, there's Syrah, but who buys that anymore?California actually produces many fantastic wines that aren't made from these dominant grape varieties, but most people don't drink them. At least not often. And some people haven't even heard of them....

For my tasting notes on all these wines, see Southwold 2008s right bank and Southwold 2008s left bank . For such a small seaside town, Southwold in Suffolk (pictured) is extraordinarily famous. The dominant company, Adnams, must have played a part in this, thanks to both the affection.
