The Spirit Within

The O'Neill Foundation recognizes and celebrates the power of the human spirit in every person.

It is our goal to see it flourish throughout the communities in which we live, work and raise our families. Another spirit, one of giving, has long united O'Neill family members as we work together to fulfill our family's central value: serving our communities. Through our active involvement in the Foundation, and guided by personal knowledge of those communities and our experience with nonprofits, we strive to support vital works and to honor the spirit of William and Dorothy through wise stewardship of our grantmaking legacy.

  NEW MISSION FOR THE FOUNDATION

At its August 22, 2011 meeting the O'Neill Trustees voted to accept a new vision and mission for the Foundation:

Vision: Communities where families thrive

Mission:  To partner with nonprofits to improve the quality of life for families and communities, in places where O'Neill family members live.

Values:

  • Respect and transparency. We respect and value the expertise of those with whom we collaborate in our shared work: our nonprofit partners, the individuals who lead them, each other as family members and staff.  We are transparent, among ourselves and with our partners, in how we accomplish our grant making and in our decision making.
  • Inclusion and diversity. We value the diverse perspective of our partners, the people they serve and others who work in our areas of interest.  We invite and encourage broad participation of all interested family members.
  • Effectiveness. We invest the Foundation's resources in effective nonprofits that change lives.  We evaluate all we do and make adjustments based on what we learn.
  • Skill building and shared learning. We work in ways that emphasize learning, skill building and knowledge sharing--among our family and among our partners.
  • Enthusiasm. We encourage and nurture philanthropy in our family and we share our enthusiasm.  We look for passion in our grantees.  We expect to enjoy the work that we share.

These statements are the result of nearly a year of careful and throughtful discernment by the William J. and Dorothy K. O'Neill Foundation family members.  No changes to the actual grantmaking programs will be made until phase II of the planning is completed. We will keep you informed.

ELIGIBILITY PROCESS CLOSED

As a result of the recently adopted new mission and vision stated above, the O'Neill Foundation is conducting an in-depth review of all aspects of our grantmaking.  During this review, the Foundation will not consider any new applications for eligibility to the Capacity Building Grants program from any organization as of December 1, 2011.

This action does not affect organizations already eligible to seek support from the Foundation's Capacity Building Grants program.

We encourage you to check our website and/or our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/oneillfoundation) often to learn about when or how our grantmaking strategies are evolving in 2012.

Thank you for your understanding during this exciting time at the Foundation.

 2011 Cycle 3 Grant Awards--Capacity Building Grants

The Foundation completed its 2011 Capacity Building grantmaking and recently awarded $523,046 in grants to thirty-five nonprofit organizations in seven of the metropolitan areas that it serves.

O'Neill Foundation President & CEO, Leah S. Gary states "The funding cycle began on August 1st when we received 798 Letters of Inquiry.  Forty-two final proposals were received and considered by the O'Neill Grantmaking Committee--there were a lot of difficult decisions over which grants to fund. Ultimately, the Committee identified grant requests that would have the greatest impact on the organizations and clients served.  We're proud of this docket of grants and look forward to exciting project results."

Capacity building projects were funded to non-profit organizations in seven cities, including Washington, DC; Houston, TX; Baltimore and Annapolis, MD; New York, NY; Columbus and Cleveland, OH. Highlights include:

  • Ohio City Inc. (Cleveland, OH): $25,000 towards the installation of a door-counting system at the historic West Side Market, which will celebrate its Centennial in 2012.  Ohio City Inc. provides community and economic development support to the residents, businesses and visitors to Cleveland's Ohio City Neighborhood. www.ocnw.org

  • Sunnyside Community Services (New York, NY): $10,000 to fund a business planning consultant to explore revenue generating programs in response to the increased gentrification of one of Queen's most hard pressed neighborhoods.  Sunnyside provides social and human services to the residents of Western Queens. www.scsny.org
