The westbound deck of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will be closed during Presidents’ Day weekend 2012. Construction of a slight detour near the toll plaza will require the upper deck heading into San Francisco to be closed from 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21. Eastbound traffic will have full access to the bridge during the closure.
Weather could delay the reopening of the westbound deck or postpone the closure to another weekend.
Motorists will not be able to drive on the upper deck towards San Francisco during this closure but the lower deck toward the East Bay will remain open. Residents and visitors will have numerous alternatives for getting around the Bay Area while the westbound deck is closed.
Allow extra time for travel and use of other bridges, including the Golden Gate Bridge, the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, the San Mateo- Hayward Bridge and the Dumbarton Bridge. Vehicle access between San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island/Treasure Island will be maintained during the closure.
BART (BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT)
BART will run overnight service at select stations during the closure.
Stations on the El Cerrito - Dublin hourly service route are:
El Cerrito del Norte, Berkeley, MacArthur, 12th Street, Coliseum, Bay Fair and
Dublin/Pleasanton.
Stations on the Concord - SFO hourly service route are:
Concord, Walnut Creek, MacArthur, 12th Street, Embarcadero, Powell, 24th Street, Daly City and SFO

FERRY SERVICE
Alameda-Oakland Ferry, Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry and Vallejo Baylink Ferry will run additional ferries during the closure.

AC TRANSIT
Transbay service will not operate over the bridge during the closure, but will maintain regular service in the East Bay by operating to and from West Oakland BART. Line 800 all-night buses will connect passengers with BART's special late-night service (except on Tuesday morning, 1am-4am) by operating to and from the 12th St. BART station in downtown Oakland. PREVIOUS OPENING PLAN
The original Bay Bridge’s westbound lanes are directly in the path of the eastbound lanes of the new East Span. Westbound motorists would have started driving on the new span while eastbound traffic would have stayed on the original bridge. Workers could then demolish the old westbound lanes and finish the new eastbound roadway during four to six months of construction.
OAKLAND TOUCHDOWN DETOURS
A plan to realign traffic lanes and build detours just west of the toll plaza will allow engineers and construction crews to complete those new eastbound lanes ahead of schedule; this approximately 1,000-foot-long stretch of the new Bay Bridge is called the Oakland Touchdown. By implementing these detours for the next two years, the entire bridge will open to the public earlier than previously scheduled. The detours will allow construction crews to work between the existing and new bridges to complete the new eastbound lanes, which is not possible without the traffic realignment. Eastbound traffic will begin using the detour in May 2011 while westbound will start in early 2012. More information will be provided prior to the traffic shifts.
