Flashback Friday: Ground Zero

Friday, September 9th, 2011

As we approach the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I thought it was appropriate to look back and remember that day. These pictures were taken some time after the event (June 2002) but you can see that it is not business as usual in New York.

I was working for Microsoft and calling on some of our smaller retailers, one of which was J&R Computer World in Lower Manhattan. The only time I ever saw the twin towers in person was when we went to lunch one day and we stopped and they pointed out the World Trade Center. You could not even see to the top as it was covered by fog. I do remember that it was an impressive site.

I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was pregnant with Cameron and on the phone with my boss and we were sort of talking about it and watching the news and then the tower fell and we just decided to get off the phone. I remember watching Lisa Beamer talking about her husband and how she was pregnant too and I just cried and cried. All those kids who would never meet their dads. It was heart wrenching. Now Cameron is 10 years old and she just keeps asking, “why would someone do that?” There is no good answer to that question is there?

We had the opportunity to walk around ground zero in July when we did our big roadtrip up the east coast. Everything was covered due to the 9/11 Memorial being worked on but we did have a chance to view the memorial that was on the side of the WTC firehouse. The girls thought the names engraved in the sculpture were of the people who died that day…I had to explain that those were just the firefighters that died that day. I think they were stunned by that and very thoughtful. It was a good opportunity for us to talk about it and walk around. The church that you see in these pictures is back to normal. There are no more memorials or posters hanging on its gates, the ash has all been cleaned up…but it would be impossible to forget what happened there 10 years ago.

Flashback Friday: 5 Years Ago Today (almost!)

Friday, August 26th, 2011

I only seem to be posting Flashback Friday but it is so fun to go back and look for pictures that I have never shared. I was working on my photography in these pics…white sheet and all. The photography has come a long way but the girls sure were cute (of course, I think they still are but you know what I mean!). Enjoy!
