About Me!
by Julie on Dec 29, 2010 • 9:23 am 6 CommentsWho’s behind the carrot? Here is a little information on how Burnt Carrots came to life!
I was a very difficult child when it came to eating. I survived on a 5-ingredient diet consisting of cream cheese (I once ate an entire block in one swoop), Kraft Singles cheese slices, ketchup, bacon, and mac and cheese.
My mother knew better than to attempt to expand my food horizons, while my father agreed with my diet as I’m pretty sure this is still his diet (with the addition of mixed nuts and scotch)!
I might still be munching on this dairy and pork heavy nutritionist’s nightmare if it weren’t for my husband, Chris.
Even though we grew up 5 minutes away from one another, we might as well been on different planets. While he was eating poached salmon, I was eating my sixth grilled cheese of the week.
Desperate to impress him when we started dating, I’d try almost any food he asked me to (with the exception of cow’s heart). Eventually, I started enjoying and even appreciating my new culinary world. Now the tables have turned and I’m the pushy one expanding his food boundaries.
As my love and knowledge of food grew, so too did my desire to find good ingredients. A few months following my exposure to Michael Pollen and Food Inc, I vowed to only eat and buy honest ingredients. I continue to have a lot of passion around these issues. As a society, we’ve disconnected ourselves from the very thing that keeps us alive: Food. I’m proud of my small role in the food movement that is changing this perception.
So, how did I get here? Well, I did my stint in corporate America and barely came out alive. Seeking a career that lit a spark inside of me, I turned to cooking, blogging, and photography in my new home town of Boulder, CO.
Thank you for stumbling onto my site. I hope you will stick around and help me achieve my goal of becoming an informed self-taught chef!
What do you think?

ReplyI found you through your comment on ‘the edible perspective’. I saw that you just moved to Boulder from NYC! That’s so exciting and awesome, because I’m from Boulder as well. Are you absolutely in love with Colorado yet? If not, wait until our first snowfall (and make sure to have your camera handy). The Flatirons are absolutely breath taking. ^_^

ReplyInteresting story. I don’t blame you for not wanting to eat a cow heart. Animal innards still gross me out. And welcome to food blogging.

ReplyHi Julie ~
It’s Susan from Cardamom Kitchen. I wanted to respond to your question. Yes, you can create a makeshift double boiler to melt chocolate. Fill a saucepan with an inch or so of water. Bring it to a gentle simmer. Place a bowl on top. (It should be snug so steam won’t settle on the chocolate). Stir chocolate to ensure it melts evenly.
I love your blog. It’s beautiful!
Cheers,
Susan

ReplyHi Susan! Thanks for the tip! I’m so happy I don’t have to buy (and then figure out where to store in my tiny kitchen) another pot! Metal bowls are much easier!
