The Monthly Business Checklist: 5 Things You Should be Doing Once a Month ran on She’s Self Employed November, 2011. The piece talks about how to work ON your business, not just IN it. 

“It’s very easy to work at your business every month; it’s not so easy to work on your business every month,” said Dan Jablon of Retail Smart Guys, when he and I chatted recently. His point was that sometimes it’s hard to step away from the day-to-day to focus on growing your business; but doing so is essential to success.

When you “get” to work everyday (whether you work from home or your business is elsewhere), it’s likely that you immediately become engrossed in the day-to-day running of your company. You flip around your open sign and begin all the tasks that have to happen everyday: email, managing employee problems, selling products/services, looking for new customers, marketing your business, etc. In other words, you work “at” your business. When things are busy (and, perhaps even more so when they aren’t) your to-do list seems a million miles long and it’s easy to forget to step back and look at the bigger picture.
