Use Odd Objects to Get a Crushing Grip

Stumbled across this slopy grip training toy. Tickle me GripMo.

Looks like fun, but it comes at a hefty $140. So much for that.

I like the idea of using odd objects to challenge your grip. But I would probably settle for the Elite FTS Grenades or the good ol' DIY baseball pull up grips.

So the moral of the story is: Look around you and see if you can improvise and build training equipment yourself (or know somebody who's got the skills).

Do you have a DIY grip training tool? I'd love to see it.

Fat Gripz vs Grip4orce vs Tyler Grips Handles

Jedd from the DieselCrew posted a detailed review of various thick bar handles.

He lists the pros and cons of Tyler Grips, Fat Gripz, and Grip4orce Handles.

I own a pair of Fat Gripz, but I don't use them that often. However it's a nice addition if you want to mix things up in your training.

Paleo Solution Podcast #110 Mixed Grip Deadlifts

In Paleo Solution Podcast #110 Greg Everett shares his opinion on using a mixed grip for deadlifts.

Question is at 41:22 on straight leg deadlift grip.

Notes:
  • he does not use it (he's not a powerlifter)
  • doesn't like position it puts the supinated shoulder in
  • excessive strain on biceps tendon
  • tends to get people facing the bar a little crooked
  • we are talking straight leg deadlifts, not max deadlift
  • purpose is strengthen the back, hamstring and glutes, not to strengthen the grip
  • doesn't see a need for mixed grip
What if you have a weak grip?
  • try double overhand grip, with hook grip (tape your thumbs)
  • use straps
  • using straps does mean your not using your grip, hand still has to work

Ball Grip Pull Ups - Grip Strength Builder

This post on reddit reminded me how awesome homemade grip strength tools like baseballs, tennis balls and softballs are.

If you have ever been to a climbing gym you probably have seen these things before. They are a cheap, but valuable addition to your home gym.

Click here for a tutorial by Ross Enamait on how to build your own.

You don't have to restrict yourself to just softballs. Try hanging different kinds of odd objects to keep things interesting.
