  The Bay Lights

  THE BAY LIGHTS is an iconic light sculpture designed by internationally renowned artist Leo Villareal. Similar to the ambitious lighting of the Eiffel Tower for its 100th anniversary, we will commemorate the Bay Bridge’s 75th Diamond Anniversary – at 7x the scale of the famous Parisian landmark – by installing 25,000 LED lights onto the bridges’ cables, networked to create a spectacular, animated array across the West Span. This installation will live for two years, providing a stunning fine arts experience for the entire Bay Area and its visitors with the goal of illuminating the arts both locally and globally. Over 200 people from various private and nonprofit organizations are already working collaboratively to see this project through to fruition. And a cultural alliance has been forged with some of the Bay Area’s most creative organizations including: bam/PFA Berkeley Center for New Media Black Rock City llc BRAF Friends of the Gateway (FOG) GAFFTA Maker Faire SFMOMA SJICA SJMA ZERO1: The Art and Technology Network But, we need your help to turn the lights on! Looking for a special holiday gift? You can make a gift of light in the name of a friend or loved one. The total budget for THE BAY LIGHTS is $7M and needs to be raised prior to the March 2012 installation deadline. Lights On is targeted for September 2012. The lights will be lit for two years. This grassroots effort is a vital component of our massive fund-raising efforts. Historic patronage is required for THE BAY LIGHTS to be realized $5,000 was raised in our first few days of this Causes campaign!! We are expanding our Causes goal to $50,000 and hope to reach it before years end. THE BAY LIGHTS is project of Illuminate the Arts Solar credits for energy used will be provided by Clean Path Fiscal sponsorship provided by ZERO1: The Art & Technology Network If we are unable to meet the goals required to turn on THE BAY LIGHTS in 2012, the funds raised will go to the creation of another Leo Villareal piece in the Bay Area presented by Illuminate the Arts.
