Why Filipino Devotees Love The Black Nazarene

Posted on January 11, 2012 by Rapido

In the Philippines, the Black Nazarene is addressed as Mahal na Itim na Nazareno  while the Spanish use Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno.  Every January 9,   millions of Filipino devotees flock to the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo to attend the Traslacion, the procession where the image of the Black Nazarene is transferred to the shrine.  This year, the transfer of the image from Quirino Grandstand  to Quiapo Church took 22 hours, the longest ever in the history of the feast of the Black Nazarene.

The original statue of the Black Nazarene was brought to the Philippines from Mexico back in the Spanish times but the ship carrying it caught fire and it charred the image. To protect the original statue from wear and tear, a replica has been made which carries the original head and hands during the Traslacion. The original statue was only used as a whole in the procession during the 400th anniversary of the Black Nazarene in 2007.

Pangasius or Cream Dory

Posted on January 6, 2012 by Rapido

Cream Dory or Pangasius has become a popular fish lately. It’s often found in the frozen section of supermarkets already filleted. For those curious how a living pangasius fish actually looks like, see the photo below:

Cream dory fish comes from the catfish family. In the Philippines, catfish species include the hito and kanduli. The bodies of both catfish are smaller than the pangasius. However, while kanduli fish is silver-colored, the pangasius fillet has a combination of silver and black.

New Year’s Eve Customs We Did At Home

Posted on January 3, 2012 by Rapido

Happy New Year! I hope you had a blast. I had a good time welcoming 2012 with the whole family. Unlike the past years when we celebrated it in an upscale mall in Quezon City, Philippines, we celebrated New Year’s Eve this year at home. My grandmother reminded us to be at home when the clock strikes 12. Apparently, this will bring luck to our family. And this is just one of the many New Year’s Eve traditions/practices that we did as welcomed 2012.

Most of the New Year’s Eve customs that are done in the Philippines are greatly influenced by the Chinese who have started interacting with Pinoys since pre-colonial times. The customs/practices focus on driving away bad luck and bringing in good fortune to the family.

Our Lady of Peñafrancia

Posted on September 18, 2010 by Rapido

So, when did the devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, or “Ina“, begin?

It started when a Spanish family went to the Philippines to live here. Their son, Miguel Robles de Covarrubias (who studied in a seminary), got sick.  His family prayed for him to recover, and he also promised Ina that he will build her a chapel on the banks of the Pasig River. When he was cured, he was ordained and assigned to Ciudad de Nueva Caceres (now called Naga City).

During his stay here, he told the natives to build the Lady a chapel made out of nipa and bamboo, and he also told an artist to make a statue of the Lady out of stone. The paint that was used for this statue was made out of dog’s blood when it’s throat was slashed. When the body of the dog was thrown into the Bicol River, the body came back to life and swam to the shore.
