Tin Iglesias

Tin loves fashion. She’s constantly taking on challenges to evolve within the industry. Whether it be studies or work she lives and breathes fashion. A freelance fashion illustrator/stylist/writer and an aspiring fashion designer, not to mention a blogger for Nuffnang Philippines.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What’s your educational background? What are your general professional and non-professional interests?
I grew up in Metro Manila. I took up Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas during my first year and then I transferred to the University of the Philippines, Diliman. I am currently taking up a BS degree in Clothing Technology. I am also a contributor for Malaysia-based fashion website, Tongue in Chic, and I’m an exclusive Nuffnang blogger. As for my interests, I enjoy shopping, writing, styling, drawing, painting, making clothes and accessories, reading fashion blogs and magazines, traveling as well as taking photographs.

Where do you get your design inspiration?
Anything and everything. I get my inspiration from all different places including: the street, people, art, books, movies, magazines, nature, cultures, history, among others.

When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
I have had a passion for the arts ever since I was young, not necessarily in fashion design/styling/illustration/writing but just the general concept of art and the infinite creativity that exists within it. The passion just gradually built up as I continued learning in college.

What does fashion mean to you?
This may sound cheesy, but it means the world to me! As Coco Chanel put it, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” It’s my favorite quote!

What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?
An A-line leatherette skirt.

What do you like best about designing clothes and whats the most challenging part?
The best part about designing clothes is being able to interpret a concept into a print, then into a dress, and then onto a person. The challenging part would be the actual production.

What do you believe makes a quality article of clothing?
Fabric type, stitch, texture and construction.

How would you define your personal style?
Eclectic and very unpredictable. I’m pretty much adventurous when it comes to my style.

What are some of your fashion goals?
I want to study in Parsons The School for Design or Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. I also want to have my own clothing brand and eventually participate in Philippine Fashion Week and other international fashion shows (my fairy tale dream).

Who’s your most influential fashion designer/s?
Internationally, it would be Riccardo Tisci and Christophe Decarnin for their sense of enthusiasm and boldness, Alexander Wang, Rick Owens and Rad Hourani for their ability to mix opulence with edge, Vivienne Westwood and Jeremy Scott for their imaginative and eclectic pieces, and Karl Lagerfeld for his ability to produce such vast array of designs and structures, concept and grandeur year upon year. Locally, I like the design aesthetics of Rajo Laurel, Mich Dulce, Kermit Tesoro, Norman Noriega, Don Protasio, Ivarluski Aseron and Patrick Galang.

What do you wish people would understand about working in the fashion industry?
It’s definitely glamorous, but it’s a lot of hard work.

What trends do you see being big for 2010?
Biker clothing, sheer, lace, wedges, and many more!

What are your favorite colors to work with and why?
I actually don’t have a favorite color to work with. Different projects require different color palettes. However, I think black and white are a must for any basic design and are good starters.

Where can readers find out more about you and your work?
Check out my blog at www.tiniglesias.com. I have yet to create an online portfolio!

What one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career in fashion?
You have got to have strong ideas and lots of determination.

Any closing thoughts?
Thank you so much for taking interest in me and the things I do. More power to Manila Streetstyle! Continue to inspire people and good luck on your future endeavors.
