What a year 2011 was!

Oh yes! What a year 2011 was indeed!

In 2010, I started to step an inch away from my comfort zone, and I honestly didn’t think that 2011 would get me even farther from it.

For starters, I was able to stand in front of people, yay! Bloggers, even.

In April, I delivered a talk on writer’s block in front of many bloggers, who knows a lot about the subject, in iBlog7. Yet, I managed to survive — in one piece!

While all the preparation for that talk was happening, a seed of a dream was growing within. It was a long-delayed quest to finally spread my wings. And in May of 2011, that dream became true. REFLECTION was a dream that took more than 20 years to happen, but it was worth the wait.

To see and hold a book bearing my name was just too much for me. I honestly never thought it could happen, to finally publish my book of poetry. But it didn’t stop there, publishing wasn’t enough.

I must have done something good in my past life, because I was able to hold a grand book launching in Museo Ning Angeles which was attended by Angeles City Mayor Ed Pamintuan.

And for a night, I was living my dream.

Then there was lull… but not for long. For in August of this year, I stood again in front of many students, in a bigger venue — the Event Center of SM Clark and delivered my first talk as a writer.

It was the awarding ceremony for the inter-school short story writing completion participated in by many high schools in Angeles City. I shared my experience… my journey… my catalyst, on how I nurtured and until I was finally able to make my dream come true. I just hoped I was able to share something worth valuable to them then.

I thought that was it. With all the excitement and anticipation of all attendees for the announcement of winners, I never really expected them to be REALLY listening to me. But in October, on the same venue, on entirely unrelated event,  an affirmation happened.

It was a United Nation’s Day celebration and I was there because my daughter Angel was among included in the parade. Two ladies, a teacher and her student from Narciso School, approached me while I was standing at the side of the stage waiting for my daughter. The student was one of the finalists in the short story writing contest where I was the guest speaker.

The teacher said she listened to my talk, was moved and inspired that dreams do come true. She said that she also dreams of having her own book published someday, and I told her that it is very much a possibility. Then they asked me to have their pictures taken with me. Feeling like a celebrity, I am much obliged and readily posed with them. And what a time for that lift-upper to come!

Another highlight for me this year was the showing of my life story on national TV. Much to my hesitation because of the belief that my life is nothing out of the ordinary, I gave in to the request from TV5 to allow me to share my story to their televiewers, and this was shown last November. Thus far, I am hearing positive feedback from the episode.

If not only for one minor detail (which is entirely another story), 2011 could have been a great banner year. Heck! It was a great banner year! And if it’s any indications of the things to come, I think I should prepare myself.

In 2011 I started spreading my wings… in 2012, I will take flight!

Thank you for memories 2011… bring it on 2012!
