Writing Courses

I offer a LOT of different writing courses. Links for them are changing as I revamp my sites to make everything easy to navigate.

For now, you can find what I offer here:

  • Shop.HollyLisle.com

Short or single-subject courses on topics like plotting, characterization, writing dialogue, beating writer’s block, and much more.

  • Free Professional Plot Outline

A seven week freecourse on developing a workable plot outline, starting from no idea.  This is an introduction to my teaching style and a tiny sampling of methods I use to help writers discover the best stories they have in them.  If you get good results from this course, my other courses will work for you, too.

  • How To Think Sideways

This is my comprehensive “how to write fiction—starting from no idea, clear through final draft, marketing, your next book, and your whole writing career” course. It’s HUGE.  It takes a minimum of six months to get through, and can take more.

It is everything I’ve learned in this business in the past 25 years, compressed into the biggest and most complete shortcut to writing professionally I could devise. It isn’t for everyone, but if you want to write for a living, it may be for you.

Take the freebie plot outline course first, or one of my short clinics from the shop, and make sure my teaching methods, which are NOT like everyone else’s, work for you.You can also find out what’s going on in class at How To Think Sideways News.

  • How To Revise Your Novel

If you’re serious AND you’ve already completed a work of fiction (anything over about 6000 words will do), How To Revise Your Novel is the five-plus-month course on my process of doing ONE comprehensive revision on a novel.

I don’t piddle around with years of changes, I don’t tinker.  I get the best book I am capable of writing in ONE pass, and then I move on to the next book. This course is exactly, step by step, how I do that, and how you can too. It will change the way you see your writing, and give you complete control over getting the book you want from the one you wrote. It is also the toughest course I teach, without exception…and without apology.

Revision is the toughest skill a writer must master to succeed.  I’ll make sure you get it right.
