I seem to have had the busiest January ever and produced videos for two marvelous projects.

The first of which was working with the wonderful ReeRee Rockette of Rockalily Lipsticks, to help her produce some product promo videos for her vintage inspired lipstick range.

I wrote about the shoot day a couple of days after the shoot [go read here] and below is the finished promo video

The next event and video production was the wonderfully named ZOMGbloggerbash, which was held to promote the Rockalily lipstick made in collaboration with The London Lipgloss. The lipstick is called “ZOMG!” and the event was held to invite all the fabulous beauty, fashion and vintage inspired bloggers to come and hang out and be entertained.

See below for the video that [be warned] includes some partial nudity by the gorgeous and glamourous burlesque stars

I had such fun shooting and editing these videos and can only hope this year is filled with more fun projects such as these.

Video Archive- getting used to your face on video

spacer One of the things that stops peeps from getting in front of the camera is the dislike of what their face ACTUALLY looks like on screen.

We’re used to looking in the mirror when our face is static and without movement. So as soon as we see our face moving, our expressions, the way our nose scrunches up when we say something, we get all ‘eeeeuuuw, I don’t like that AT ALL’

It takes a wee bit of practice and doing quite a bit of video before you’ll entirely get used to your face on screen. The video below talks about this and gives you an exercise to do to help you get over this and just get on and record some video!!

Do you know what *kind* of video you are trying to create?

Do you have a proper think about what it is you’re trying to convey before you record video?

Most people don’t and it shows

Let me be clear, I’m not talking about the multitude of people all over the world that create “off the cuff” stream of consciousness type content & upload straight to YouTube without any editing. That kind of video is great if you intend for it to fit into that niche of video making.

You are not those people. You are a woman, with a business. And you want to connect with your audience.

You have an online space, you want to reach more people and you’d like to leverage the use of video, to message your peeps and engage on a different level. And you totally can provided you do a teeny, tiny bit of preparation before hitting the record button.

Here are a few things you can do to make sure your videos are on brand, set a tone and connect with your audience:

CONSISTENCY & SET-UP: There are a few entrepreneurial women online with their own web TV shows or regular video content that choose to always set their videos in the same space/studio/set up. If you want to do this, it’s great for creating familiarity & setting the scene. Your viewer expects it and so is not distracted with the background and can concentrate on what you say.

Don’t fret about having to rent an expensive studio space for this though, just find somewhere that you know will, with some regularity, be free for you to use, will be quiet and does not have too much going on in the background. And if you are inclined to change it up each time you record a video, that’s fine too but remember, make sure it’s safe, it’s quiet and that there aint too much going on in the background to distract your viewer.

SETTING THE TONE: You know your field, your thang, your business and so should have a sense of the tone you’d like to set when creating your videos. Be careful to not get too wrapped up in what is ‘expected’ of people in your field of expertise. Don’t subscribe to what you think you SHOULD do but go with your gut and feel free to express yourself truly and with integrity. This is the best way and it’ll absolutely help your viewer connect with YOU and your message.

But do keep in mind what it is you wish your viewer to take away, the message you hope to convey to them and what they are going to get out of it. For me, my business message is infused with FUN & laughter [it's the Jester part of my business archetype] as well as the practical things you need to know when creating video. Hence why it’s totally on brand and the right tone for me to record silly/funny videos and to not take myself too seriously. My viewer gets this and gets my message that making video does not have to be ALL serious all the time.

Again try not to compare and mimic what others are doing in your field but make sure if you’re gonna record a video of you dancing around to Beyonce, in your knickers, in your bedroom, that it’s on brand for you, that your audience will ‘get’ it and that you don’t risk alienating the very people you are hoping to connect with.

BREVITY IS BEAUTIFUL. I’m sure it was Danielle La Porte that coined that phrase, when talking about your writing. The same holds true for video. No one wants to hear you yap on about your ‘thang’ for 15-20mins, it’s tres boring, no-one has the attention span for it and peeps will press stop and click away. Not good.

So harness the power to say what you want to say in a brief but powerful way. If you think it can’t be done, watch your favourite commercial and you’ll see how certain brands are able to tell you EVERYTHING you need to know in 20-30 seconds. KAPOW!

Do you have a question?

Hope that helps set you up for the next video you are hoping to create dollface and if you have a question, leave one in the comments or I’m always about on Twitter, Facebook or email me , I’d be happy to help.
