Home Products Software QMix |
With free PreSonus QMix™ software, up to ten musicians can simultaneously control their StudioLive™ monitor (aux) mixes using an iPhone® or iPod touch®. Six different mixes with a 16.4.2. Ten individual mixes with a 24.4.2. Four mixes with a StudioLive 16.0.2.
QMix works a lot like SL Remote: One or more iPhones network wirelessly with a Mac® or PC, enabling QMix to remote-control Virtual StudioLive, which in turn controls one or more FireWire-connected StudioLive™ mixers. When each iPhone connects to the new network, its copy of QMix will discover all StudioLive mixers on the network. In this way, each musician can quickly and easily create an aux mix that includes all mixer channels.
Do the math: Personal monitor-mixing systems run between $200 and $700 per person and require beau coups connections. Even if you don’t own an iPhone, a used 3G or 4G iPod touch can run you as little as $125. QMix on an iPhone or iPod touch automatically syncs with the monitor (aux) channels on your StudioLive mixer via Universal Control 1.5.3. And it’s wireless. And you can play “Angry Birds” on it!
It all begins with Universal Control 1.5.3, running on a FireWire-equipped laptop and connected to your StudioLive.
In the Virtual StudioLive portion of Universal Control, you can set permissions so that each iPhone user can only control one specified mix (or all mixes). This way, bandmates can’t mess with each otherʼs monitors, encouraging peace onstage and goodwill to all. You can also name the mixes with more descriptive names than “Aux 1,” “Aux 2,” etc.
Here you select the mixer channels you want to instantly control in your personal monitor mix. Then you’re ready for the soon-to-be--famous Wheel of Me, a virtual thumbwheel that adjusts the volume of your “Me” channels in relation to the rest of the monitor mix. You can have as much “Me” as you want: If you push “Me” levels past Unity Gain level, QMix simply reduces the level of the other mix channels.
Unless VSL permissions are set to Wheel Only, you can rotate your iPhone to Landscape view, which provides control of the aux-mix send level and pan position (for linked auxes) for each channel and aux. Want more kick drum? Dial it in. More keyboard? Dial it in. You can also set permissions in VSL to make you the Designated Onstage Monitor Mix Engineer, with access to all of the QMix monitor mixes.
This is just a quick summary of what QMix can do. Download it from the Apple App Store and put it to work with Universal Control 1.5.3 or later and your StudioLive mixer!
