Making Allergy Control Easier

July 7th 2008 01:48
Allergies are one of the hardest things to control, especially if the allergy is a child's allergy so here are some easier ways of helping.

The biggest thing you can do to help control allergies is to have a vegetable and fruit garden. this is because vegetables can be steamed to replace eggs in all forms of baking. Steamed pumpkin mashed to a puree is one of the most popular and easily made egg replacer. In Australia, where I am based we have Chokos.

Chokos are a very bland vegetable that grows rampantly if allowed. Chokos are a life saving vegetable in that they can be added to anything to replace eggs. Being a very watery vegetable they can be used to minimize milk and dairy use. Chokos will also take the flavour of anything they are added to. So they can be a very sweet vegetable if added to cakes, pancakes, slices etc or can be used to add bulk to savoury meals.

It can take the place of meat or is very successful at reducing the amount of meat required without reducing the taste of meat in soups, stews, casseroles or pies.

With wheat free or gluten free baking one of the biggest challenges is to get the look and taste of gluten based baking. That is gluten free cakes do not rise to the height that is expected of cakes. Fruit can be used as a basis for bulking of cakes. By adding fresh fruit or pureed fruit you can add sweetness and bulk at the same time. Fruit puree can also replace eggs in baking although not as successfully as using steamed pumpkin.

From a mothers perspective the ability to use steamed vegetables in almost anything is a big bonus. You can, without worry, allow that piece of cake is you know it has vegetable and fruit as a major ingredient.

To avoid wheat flour one of the easiest things to use is oat flour. The easiest way of getting oat flour is to make your own and it can be made easily by grinding rolled oats. The only thing to remember is to use traditional oats, not the quick cooking oats. Just use a blender and keep grinding until you get to flour.

It still has gluten so if you need to avoid gluten it you wont the able to use it.

Main things to remember:

Use fruit and vegetables as much as possible.

Allergy free living can be difficult so good planning is essential.

Experiment. You won't know if something works unless you try it. If it works take notes and share the information. Everyone is always looking for new, better recipes that can be used.
