NATE Certification for Air Conditioning Repairs
How do you know the person repairing your air conditioner knows what they’re doing? Is it something you can assume? Where did they get their training?
There are basically three different levels of being an air conditioning repairman.
1. The first level is a novice. This can be anyone, and they may or may not have any real education or know-how about air conditioning repair. To be allowed to work on an air conditioner one merely needs to possess an EPA certification. This states the possessor knows the rules regarding refrigerant, and the test is little more than the safe handling of refrigerant. You must memorize some dates, but it only touches on actually using refrigerant correctly. If you are adept at taking tests, a person off the street could study and pass this test in a week.
2. The second level of air conditioning repair would be a graduate of an air-conditioning repair school. I would also include in this group an apprentice who has been trained by long-term air conditioning repair experts. These graduates have been trained in how an air conditioner works. They know how to properly charge an air conditioning unit with refrigerant, and can diagnose electrical and airflow problems. Some are very good and others are mediocre at best. Sometimes the experts that taught them aren’t experts at all and they have been taught how to repair an air conditioner incorrectly.
3. The level of air conditioning repair that is the pinnacle is the NATE-certified technician. NATE is an acronym for North American Technician Excellence. NATE-certified air conditioning repair experts have gone through extensive training and have passed a rigorous test, a test that has a very high failure rate.
NATE is the only certification that is supported by the entire industry.
At Global Warming & Cooling, our 9 technicians possess 20 different NATE certifications. Some of course, have more than others but we are committed to the ongoing education of our air conditioning repair technicians.

Wow, it’s amazing what people don’t know. It’s unbelievable that people are allowed to do something they haven’t even been educated on.
I had no idea there are certifications. And how would you know if someone was or
wasn’t certified? Is it inappropriate or senseless to ask on the phone?
These articles have really enlightened me to a lot of things that I used to take for granted. Thank you for sharing your expertise so that we now know what to look for to make sure we are getting the very best quality of service and getting the right company/person for the job!

I went to high school with a guy named Nate, he usually had some pretty good advice. I’m sure his standards weren’t nearly as exacting.

It has happened for years , unqualified people trying to steal customers from the more qualified repairer .
I’m happy that the test is hard because it only lets the right people through.
I have had repair people out who were clearly unqualified. Now I know more what to ask!

Now I know why I’ve had people who I thought knew less about air-condtioning unit than me – and as I know virtually nothing, that took skill!

It is always good to know that there is ongoing education. With all the new technology always coming out, I bet it can be at times hard to keep up with.

Always good to know someone’s experience level and credentials. If you are good at what you do then you don’t mind being asked.
