Challenge Accepted! (And Achieved)

Cliched but totally true!

I wrote a couple of weeks ago about hitting 295lbs with a set of 10 bench presses.  Well, today I accomplished my first big goal for the year.  That’s right, 305lbs baby!  And it felt awesome.  I was really struggling on the 10th rep but the first 9 were relatively easy.  I’m tempted to go a bit higher but we’ll

Please note that I’m 38, I’m not a professional body builder and I spend less than 5 hours a week at the gym, and some of those are spent on cardio.    I have no secret training technique, no super duper bench press method, I don’t use high priced muscle supplements and I don’t use a personal trainer.  Also, I only started going to the gym when I hit 30 (and 30 hit back!).  I say this because I keep hearing people tell me they’re too busy or too old or too tired or too lazy.

Trust me folks, it’s not that hard and you don’t end up looking like a body builder who uses too many steroids either.  What you do end up with is a healthy body that will keep you mobile and independent well into old age (plus some impressed looks from your fellow gym goers).

Now on to marathon training!

I Need Your Help!

I'm hiring!

As some of you know, I’m currently trying to launch Diamonds or Dogs, my gift review site.  In order to that, I need your help.  How can you help you ask?  Well, I’m glad you asked!

First, I would really appreciate feedback on the site itself.

  • Is anything broken?
  • Is anything misspelled?
  • Any technical issues?

I’m aware of the current issue with recommendations (you may also like…) sometimes recommending things they shouldn’t. Anything else?

Second, what do you think of the site’s content?

  • Would you use a site like this?
  • How can I make it better?
  • What’s missing?
  • What do you think of the items and reviews?

Third, would you like to be a reviewer? That means you’d need to send me a profile and then 1 review every two or three weeks, and yes, you get a cut of the profits if your items sell well. Does that sound like fun? If so, contact me and let me know.

Fourth, assuming you like the site or a specific gift review, I’d really appreciate some free publicity. That means:

  • Like one of the items features on the site on Facebook. I’ve tried to make that easier by including “like” buttons on the bottom of every item review.
  • Share the site with your friends who may not see this post
  • Tell people about the site or about specific reviews
  • Retweet reviews

Essentially, spread the word about the site and any specific item you may like. Who knows, maybe someone in your life will get the hint and buy you the item you “liked” spacer

Thank you all very much for the help and I look forward to helping you with your own endeavors in the future!

The Elliptical, Great Workout or Colossal Waste Of Time?

February 6, 2012 By Gal Josefsberg 5 Comments

You Should Have Bought A Boxing Bag!

Consider the elliptical. What does it do for me exactly? Does it increase my heart rate? Yes, but not by much. I’ve checked my heart rate multiple times on an elliptical and it rarely goes over 60%. In fact, it never gets into that cardio / fat burn range unless I’m going flat out, 100% effort, and that’s impossible to sustain. Does it work my muscles? I suppose. There’s certainly some pushing and pulling involved and it does add in arms as opposed to being all legs like running and biking. However, it doesn’t do a very good job with muscles and it’s hard to really quantify which muscles it works. So what does it really do for me? [Read more...]

We Are All Beautiful And Unique Snowflakes

February 1, 2012 By Gal Josefsberg 1 Comment

spacer Ok, I’ll admit it, I occasionally read a blog by the name of fit bottomed girls.  First, because I like most of their articles and second because I really like fit bottomed girls spacer  Now that I’ve confessed that horrible fact, let me introduce you to an article I recently read on FBG which I really enjoyed:

Can We Stop Talking Clothing Size Already?

The article talks about how we’re all different in the way our bodies are shaped.  Some of us are wider, some are longer, some are more muscular and some are heavier set.  Pretending that we’re all the same or that we all should aspire to the same body shape is ridiculous.  My friend who is 6’1″ weighs less than I do and yet I’m in better shape.  Why?  Because my shoulders are broader and I’m far more muscular.  Should I be concerned about that?  Of course not.

And to women everywhere, please believe me that us men don’t think you need to look like a Victoria’s Secret model to be beautiful.  We think you’re gorgeous and we love the fact that some of you are tall, some short, some slender and some curvy.  We love you and we love your body and we love your wonderful personality and we love your confidence and we love your sense of humor and so many other things as well, we’re just happy that you tolerate us spacer

###

Also, I have yet to meet a man who really understands what women’s clothing sizes mean.  It’s like a horribly complex code setup to confuse us poor men as we try to shop for presents for the wonderful women in our lives.

Break Through!

No, this isn't me (yet!)

295lbs pressed. That’s right, I managed to do a full set of bench presses with 295lbs on the bar last week. I was really pleased because I had no idea I could do this. The closest I’ve come before is 285lbs and that was a few weeks ago. Last Wednesday though, I just said “screw it”, stacked those plates on either side, found my spotter and got to work. Is Tracking Calories and Workouts Useful?

January 25, 2012 By Gal Josefsberg 1 Comment

spacer I’ve been pondering an app called Lose It! for the past few weeks. I’ve talked about it before and I think it’s an incredible tool for those who are looking to make a change. It can really help you identify what you’re eating, how much you’re exercising and where the difference is between where you are and where you want to be. However, is it something I, or anyone else, should use for the rest of their life? At what point does tracking numbers like this stop being beneficial and start being stressful? Is it worth it to pause in the middle of a wonderful dinner with my wife just to enter in the fact that I ate a burrito?

I would quantify the usefulness of Lose It! and other apps like it in three ways:

  • It’s helpful in learning more about your habits and really digging into the details of where your problems are
  • It forces you to face your issues by making your overeating or lack of exercise really obvious
  • It motivates you to keep working at your goals by presenting you with reports and daily reminders

A Message To The Coworker With The Candy Dish At His Or Her Desk

January 23, 2012 By Gal Josefsberg 1 Comment

My enemy!

If I ever run a company, I’m going to make sure the kitchen is stocked with Almonds, peanuts, turkey and roast beef slices, cashews and maybe some berries. I’m going to make it a rule that employees cannot have giant bowls of candy at their desk and I’m going to outlaw the kitchen fridge from having any sodas in it.

I say all this because my biggest enemy in the battle of the bulge has been well meaning office managers and coworkers who insist on tempting me with their unhealthy wares. Seriously, it’s like there’s a competition going on at the office to see who can bring in the most unhealthy items. One day it’s banana nut bread and the next it’s chocolate from Hawaii. In the mean time, the well meaning office manager is stocking up on cereal, granola bars, bags of candy and cookies.

And oh how much I hate these people!!! [Read more...]
