ZLog 2012 Feb15

February 16, 2012 ZiP: Zine in Progress, ZLog No comments

Well, I wasn’t at NB for the zine release last night – I was desperately sleep-deprived and had to crash – but by all accounts it went well. M. Krotefrosch (our managing editor, writer of the feature spread in ZiP01 on Berlin + 28c3) texted to tell me “People love ZiP! Crowd goes wild!” And we made $150 in sales + donations last night alone, which is awesome. Right now I’m going through a print copy of ZiP01 (one of 5 remaining from yesterday’s batch) with a fine tooth comb, making what I hope to be the final set of corrections to the master layout. All copies printed from here on out will incorporate those changes, and I will also be updating the individual web pages.

I kind of wish someone would post a comment on here so it looked like anybody cared….but that’s the reality of life as an artist: you can put mountains of work into something and there’s no guarantee anyone has the time or inclination to admire it. It’s always on to the next project. I’m already on to my next project: a mini solo zine (perzine) titled Notes of a First-Time Squatter, about my first experience squatting/occupying an empty house in the Mission District in Nov2011-Jan2012. It will be much simpler than ZiP – should only take a few days – and I should be able to hand out a bunch of copies free or maybe for $1 or $2 apiece. (Black & white printing is about 6 times cheaper than color.)

As mentioned, please notify us of any corrections needed in ZiP01. You can leave them as comments here, or message us: zipzine@riseup.net.

Thanx

You have options.
Below is a high quality print-ready PDF so that everyone has the option of downloading and printing it on their own free of charge. Note that ZiP uses Hexadecimal pagination, not the usual decimal. Hex is what we would use normally if humans had 16 fingers. These pages are in reading order, from front cover to back cover.

Print it yourself!!
ZiP01 Print at home version

(Total file size of PDF: 58MB)

You can order print copies if you like – $7.00 USD each, plus shipping if applicable. Print copy requests to zipzine@riseup.net.

Please message us with any mistakes or corrections you find in the text, so we can add them to the master layout.

Yours in creativity,

ZLog 2012 Feb14

February 14, 2012 ZiP: Zine in Progress, ZLog No comments

ZiP01 has completed its first print run – a batch of 50 copies that were delivered to Noisebridge this evening (Valentine’s Night, 2012). It will be online in full within the next 48 hours. We’re going to make it available in a variety of formats to suit different needs, as such:

1) A ready-to-print PDF for those who want to download (free) and print the zine themselves (this version will not work for reading online, as the pages are in print-layout order, not sequential reading order)

2) A reader-friendly Flash version

3) A reader-friendly HTML version

In the meantime, have a great night and enjoy some tasty Fig Neutrons!

ZLog 2012 Feb12 – Printing in Progress!

February 13, 2012 ZFOS: ZinesFromOuterSpace, ZiP: Zine in Progress, ZLog No comments

It’s Sunday night – two days before ZiP make its debut in hacker society at My Noisy Valentine – and earlier I printed the first proof copy of ZiP01 at Kinko’s down the street from my current digs. I’m posting a few notes about that in hopes of aiding other zinesters, especially those new to self-publishing.

Kinko’s is probably the first place that comes to mind when you think of printing, but they’re not the cheapest. Office Max charges 49 cents a page for color, Kinko’s 59 cents – that’s if you’re using the simple plain laser paper. If you upgrade to better quality gloss paper (which I’m using for the covers and a color spread insert) it’s 75 cents per page.

That’s for U.S. letter size, 8.5 x 11″ (very similar to the size called A4 by the rest of the modern world).

Kinko’s, like a lot of copy+print shops I’m guessing, doesn’t print “full bleed,” meaning there will be a white border around the edges of the paper. I tried to get around that by extending the cover image past the borders of the page itself in InDesign (our main layout program), and we ended up with the cover image truncated on the first batch of print copies – some of the text cut short. (Hold onto those copies with the front cover printing error – you never know what might be worth something some day.)

I was pleased to see that even the smallest text we’d placed in the layout is still legible, at least to my (still relatively young) eyes.

ZiP01 is 30 letter sized pages, arranged as 15 duplex pages (duplex = printed on both sides). 4 of those I printed in color, 26 in black & white (the online layout will be all color, all the time). B&W pages were 9 cents/ea, color pages 75 cents/ea as mentioned. The total cost for one copy of ZiP at Kinko’s – including tax – came to $6.64.

It would be slightly less at Office Max, probably somewhere around $5.50.

I haven’t yet checked with Office Depot, Staples, or other print+copy providers.

Ultimately I’d like to find a hipper, more underground, local print shop or – better yet – initiate a working print space at Noisebridge. That was my original conceit. I will need help to realize that goal, though, so it depends on the level of interest from others.

Now I make a host of changes, corrections & additions to the layout & print a full batch of copies for Tuesday night. I hope you come see us at Noisebridge! As mentioned, please RSVP if you are new to the space. You can reach us at

We Want Your Zine! 2Review

February 10, 2012 ZFOS: ZinesFromOuterSpace, ZiP: Zine in Progress No comments

ZiP / ZinesFromOuterSpace wants to begin reviewing zines! Reviews will appear online more or less continuously, and one or two will also be included in each print chapter of ZiP.

You may email electronic material to zipsub@riseup.net. Snail mail address is coming soon…..

Also….anyone in touch with R. Seth Friedman? We were just reading about Factsheet 5 being in limbo and how no one has stepped forward to take it over. And it was making us think things that were exciting.
