The NAST Centre for Nanoscience & Nanotechnology & Innovative Instrumentation is a multidisciplinary research and training centre designed to promote research and advanced training at the forefront of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

spacer NAST combines basic science with application-orientated research and development of innovative instrumentation.

The Centre promotes scientific innovation and technological excellence through its multi-disciplinary research laboratories, provides opportunities and support for multidisciplinary research among investigators from a variety of disciplines and from different research sectors, including academia, industry and laboratories. Such multidisciplinary research not only leads to advances in knowledge, but also fosters relationships that enhance the transition of basic research results to devices and other applications. NAST mission is to favour transfer and transformation of basic knowledge in nanoscience to nanotechnology in Italian industry, to assist in the creation of spin-off companies and catalyze innovative projects in existing Italian companies and to commercialise the products of the research.

spacer The Centre is located on the site of Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata and includes about 60 staff members. The research activities in nanoscience and nanotechnology address fundamental issues in healthcare, space sciences, cultural heritage, materials, ICT, energy and environment. To accomplish this mission, the Centre integrates highly synergistic research activities in nanoscale science and design and development of innovative instrumentation with the aim to understand how to manipulate atoms and combine them in original and useful ways to produce radically new or improved structures by exploiting the new properties of matter at the level of the nanometre. The Centre houses a wide range of research equipment with a wide range of specialized tools for synthesis, characterization, and integration of hard and soft nanomaterials and for the design and construction of innovative instrumentation. It offers accommodation for researchers with common areas to promote interaction among staff, long-term research guests, and users.
