setting the stage for a fairy tale
3 things:
1. fairy tale project
During the trip I was struck by the many discussions about language that naturally arose throughout the expedition, by local native speakers as well as visitors to the area. Understandings, misunderstandings, eagerness to understand as well as some reluctances to understand. there are so many dialogues going on, around and about the people, but are they talking to each other?
I also found a beautiful romantic side of the people, which I came to associate with my own love of fairy tales, and the idea that developed over the trip- to tell a fairy tale through putting these languages side by side, can the story still make sense if it is told by many people in similar and differing languages? does the meaning of the story change in its translation?
Due to lack of time and technical difficulties during the trip itself I have decided to go back if possible to collect material for the work. As I have more time I plan to write my own version of a fairy tale combining elements of the fairy tales from each place and tradition. If anyone has any suggestions, titles or material that might be of use to me I would be very grateful for the advice..

Reflection
Submitted by kavior on Sun, 22/10/2006 - 11:50pm.Image of a building Srdjan noticed on the drive from Podgorica to Sarajevo; we were still in Montenegro at this point.
I recognized it from one of the architecture student group presentations the night before, outside the Karver bookstore.
It is an enormous structure, evidently never completed and abandoned. If you look at the broken windows closely, you can see reflections of the apartment buildings directly across the street.
If anyone knows anything more about this building (why and when it was built, the name of the town it is located in, etc.) it would be great if you could post it below.

‘Lost Highway Expedition Symposium’ at MIT; ‘Inspired by China’ at the Peabody Essex

In August 2006, in a spirit of shared purpose that could serve as a brave new model for political activism, more than 200 artists, architects, and assorted citizens of the world traversed the former Yugoslavia’s former Highway of Brotherhood and Unity (lately referred to as the “Highway of Post Brotherhood and Non Unity”), exploring the cultural and urban landscape of nine cities in the Western Balkans as an experimental, temporary society. The trek, called the “Lost Highway Expedition,” was initiated by two international cultural collaboratives, the School of Missing Studies and Centrala, Foundation for Future Cities, that were interested in seeing what new projects, artworks, architecture, and networks could be generated by sending a swarm of thoughtful folks along a road created in the 1960s to unite the many nationalities that once constituted Yugoslavia.
Centrala's application to ECF for WB worksessions + source book
Hello Everyone
Marc, Ana and me put together an application to European Cultural Foundation on Sept 15th for 3 work sessions in WB to build contents for the "ELF Source Book." The applicant is Centrala, and the project is called Buliding Lost Highway. We thought that it would be good for us to put important portion of the application here. This is to build communcation and transparency within this community/society, by announcing our activities with you all. As most of you know, the idea of worksessions and source book was borne out during LHE, in various meetings that spontaneously occurred in Trana, Podgorica and Sarajevo. Centrala has simply translated these discussions into this application. Since our request to ECF was for 29,650 Euros, it will not be enough to invite everyone in LHE through this budget. We are projecting to cover the participation of Centrala members [8] and representatives from each of LHE cities.
Lost Animalatitudes
Submitted by Wietske on Thu, 28/09/2006 - 3:53pm....during the expedition I became aware and interested in animal territories and how they overlap, metaphorically or literally with human territories, especially animals whose movements and spaces have been affected by the influx of cultural political borders. without giving too much weight to animals as victims of conflict, I want rather to think about how the latitudinal ideologicaless movement of animals negates constructions of politicized cultural spaces be they real, imagined or artificial (artists in this sense are kind of like animals!).
I am thinking of making a book or even a filmic work as an atlas of animal perspectives, territories and movement. Animal chronicles which open a portal for thinking otherwise about the existence of animal territories and when they overlap or discord with human territories and the disspapearance of animal territories altogether.

LHE now has a soccer team. It all started in Sarajevo when walking down from Kapa Hill to Bascarsija; somebody kicked a stone and the game happened automatically. We all took positions and passed the stone around while running downhill towards our last dance in the Western Balkans. The match was interrupted abruptly when we entered the Underground bar but we agreed to continue playing in Rome.
A few days later we initiated the LHE squadra. Our first mission was to find a ball and uniforms for the team. Dressed up in green maglias, we wandered the streets of Rome, following the erratic course of the ball and generating unexpected encounters. We played in the Quirinale, the fruit market, Piazza Navona, Vittorio Emanuele, the Museo dell'Ara Pacis, and the Colosseo, challenging the city to participate in our game. We found opponents of exquisite technique and unforgettable enthusiasm. Everywhere we searched for new spots to play ball, turning the city into a playground and testing the limits established by its authorities.
Ivan Kucina interview with Slobodna Evropa
Submitted by NAO on Tue, 19/09/2006 - 5:41pm.Ivan Kucina, arhitekta, docent, član Upravnog odbora Društva arhitekata Beograda i Saveta Oktobarskog salona, nažalost mnogo je poznatiji u inostranstvu nego u rodnom Beogradu.
