Irwindale Speedway looks like they will not be open for the 2012 racing season. The fast half-mile facility is showing tell-tale signs of a shutdown according to the local newspaper, The Daily News.
The story details the dismantling of the pit grandstands and moving vans at the facilities offices. It is a sad day for Southern California race fans facing the impending closure of another racing facility in its prime. Irwindale Speedway took up the slack as the only racing facility in the Los Angeles area when Ascot Park closed their doors in the '90s.
Irwindale Speedway hosted the annual Turkey Night Grand Prix, the last big open wheel race of the year and a Southern California tradition dating back to the early days of racing. The facility also hosted the official kickoff of the NASCAR season with the Toyota Showdown every January.
Many drivers from around the country tested their mettle on the fast and dangerous half-mile along with several NASCAR drivers every season. Joey Logano counts Irwindale's Toyota Showdown among his favorite races every season. Tony Stewart, Jason Leffler and Kasey Kahne are just a few NASCAR standouts who have taken a spin on famous track.
Now it looks like the Irwindale Speedway will fade into obscurity like other great Los Angeles area tracks of the past. Ascot Park, Gilmore Field, Saugus Speedway and Legion Ascot Speedway to name just a few of the historic tracks bulldozed in the Los Angeles area.
Maybe someone will step up and save the speedway from demolition. Maybe someone with a sense of history by the name of Tony Stewart or Darrell Waltrip. Both racers have an affinity for the short track and maybe one or both can get together the sponsorship dollars to keep the facility operating. The odds are long but Southern California race fans can dream of a last second savior instead of facing up to the nightmare of another closed racing facility.
