Breakout®: Boost+ ($0.99) by Atari contains an in-app purchase, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The game uses the same rules as Breakout: Boost and its “plus” version; a slider on the left side can boost the ball’s speed, earning more points, and fancy little power ups and point bonuses are tucked inside some of the bricks.

So what’s so different with this addition? The slider is still present, though very fast is labeled “Smokin’ Hot” and the slowest setting is “Ice Cold.” The multiplier bonus is available (get it?) as well as “Cupid’s Arrow,” which makes real short work of the bricks by constantly firing arrows. While these bonuses work, the jilted lover may wonder what happened to the acid and grenade balls.

All of the fifty levels include bricks arranged in different Valentine’s-themed patterns. It appears that the developers have adopted the “Rovio model” of updating its core game every now and then to keep players interested. Unlike Angry Birds, though, these updates will cost a dollar each.

The one critique I had from my first review is still present in this version as well, namely the method for controlling the paddle. In addition to moving the slider by swiping on it, there is also an extension on the bottom of it to provide more surface area. However, once you get into the frenzy of the game, you may find your finger riding up into the playing field.

For those who already have Breakout: Boost or Breakout:Boost+, the Valentines pack is just a $0.99 purchase away. Those without it can download Breakout: Boost for free and then add the pack.

If you’re looking for an app to help celebrate Valentine’s Day, you can’t go wrong with this new pack.
