The Tiny Bang Story HD ($2.99) by Colibri Games is yet another great PC indie hit that’s been brought to the iPad. In the game, the poor Tiny Planet was hit by a meteor, causing the world to fall apart. Gameplay will consist of solving puzzles and fixing machines and mechanisms to restore order to Tiny Planet.

Because the world was drawn entirely by hand, the artwork in the game is bright, colorful, and most importantly, totally gorgeous. It’s worth downloading for the graphics alone, but you will also find that the gameplay is immersive and engrossing, thanks to some pretty tricky puzzles.

There are no words in the game and few instructions, but the puzzles are intuitive. You will be given pictures of items that you need to find to fix broken items, which is an essential part of progressing through the game.

For example, in the first level, there’s a broken ladder, so you need to find all of the rungs to put back in place, and then there’s a sealed hatch which requires a wrench and a box that needs a key – all items that you need to find hidden within the scene.

That may sound easy, but the items are cleverly hidden, and it takes some time to ferret them out. There are no textual hints, but you can continually collect little dragonflies to fill up a hint meter. When it’s full, one of them will fly over and show you an item that you’ve been missing.

An eye button will reveal all of the items you can interact with in a scene, so nothing gets overlooked. There are mini games, like balloon popping and jigsaw puzzle rearranging, which is typical of hidden object type games.

The controls are simple, and consist mainly of tapping items to explore and occasionally dragging completed items from the sidebar into the room, making this a game that is suitable for all skill levels.

Puzzles aren’t overly difficult, but they are also tough enough that you will spend some time trying to figure things out. It’s not always obvious what the next step is, so you will need to explore thoroughly – keep that in mind before purchasing.

Tiny Bang Story is not without its flaws. Tapping was not entirely precise and tapping the pause button does not pause the game – it takes you to the main menu, and your spot in the game is interrupted. If you were solving something, like one of the jigsaw puzzles, you have to start from the beginning, which was frustrating.

That said, this is still a great game that I don’t hesitate to recommend. I would compare it to Machinarium, based both on the puzzle-like gameplay and the gorgeous graphics, so if you liked that game, The Tiny Bang Story is another that you will enjoy. If you want to try it out before purchasing, there’s a free version available in the App Store as well.
