Can’t let you go.

February 11, 2012 – 5:09 pm

Sometimes when I’m shopping for my ebay store I find something I just can’t put on ebay because it is too perfect for me. Like these soup bowls. At only 69c a piece I couldn’t help but keep them for myself!!

Thrifty auctions..

August 25, 2011 – 5:00 pm

Yesterday was my first time at the Salvation Army Auction!! And man was it something else. Two warehouses crammed with so much “junk” it would make your head spin. I was in aw. I still am. There was a bunch of vintage goodness, a bunch of trash and well a bunch of EVERYTHING. I wasn’t really thinking to take many photos since I was just soaking things up.

First things first. We signed in, got our numbers, asked the guy manning the desk way too many questions & then made our way around to look at every piece of furniture. We wrote down the number of anything we were interested in (thank goodness I had a sharpie in my pocket). After we looked everything over twice, we sat & waited for the auctions to begin. Mind you these warehouses are HOT. We were sweating, but luckily Sapia found someone who was selling water.

I’ll tell you right now, I lost out on the nightstands I wanted. I promised myself I wouldn’t bid over $40 for the pair. They went for $55 & I could tell the guy who wanted them REALLY wanted them. Oh well, maybe I’ll find even better nightstands next time. The bidding was crazy, some things went for unbelievable prices & other pieces that were wonderfully built didn’t get any bids. One thing that was sort of awesome is these HUGE bins they had & you would buy the WHOLE bin. Some sold for $20!! It was insane. We saw one bin had a broken globe in it & immediately talked about doing globe lighting for the studio/office. But the bin had been sold. Sure enough that didn’t stop Sapia, she bought that broken globe for $4 from the lady who bought the bin. SCORE!

That was our first score of the day. I knew all I was looking for was nightstands, bookshelves & mirrors. In fact there was a lot of mirrors, as in there were 15 mirrors and you’d get to take them all home. I wanted two mirrors out of the lot (Sapia wanted 1) but sadly we had to leave before they were auctioned off. Sapia just moved into a new home & has literally nothing in it since she moved to the states a month ago. Lucky girl has a whole place to decorate!

Well we ended up loving 3 chairs. And you wouldn’t believe it, nobody had ANY interest in these chairs. A directors chair, a blue leather office chair & a sweet white chair. We scored each chair for $5! After we won the chairs, we loaded up the SUV and headed to Sapia’s place to drop off our goods. This is the not as empty office/studio.

I’m so glad the studio area is on the ground floor, I couldn’t have imagined carrying that blue chair up any of these stairs. That sucker was NOT light at all.

It’s a Thrift thing…

July 22, 2011 – 3:57 pm

I can’t help it, I pass a thrift store and I just want to stop in for a look. On the way home from having lunch with my mom I knew I’d be passing a Goodwill. I just couldn’t help myself, I had to stop. So with Micah in tow (right at nap time I should add) we headed to Goodwill with the promise of a toy for Micah. So here is my small haul from Goodwill. You see that AquaDoodle in the back? It is brand new & only set me back $2.99. Considering that I was about to pull the trigger & just buy one on Amazon, well yeah that’s awesome I saved $27!!

spacer

Do you remember See N’ Say toys?! I loved mine as a kid & always wanted to select what it would say instead of just letting it go all random on me. This guy is the EXACT one I had a kid, alright maybe not MINE because I’m sure those stickers are peeling/torn off but this is the 1989 version that I had! So very cool & how much did it set me back? Not even $2, a sweet $1.99!

These little wood bowls are so fantastic & at 79c a piece it makes them even more beautiful! Just look at these bowls at Pottery Barn….I just about choked on that price!! No thanks Pottery Barn, I’ll stick to Goodwill. Sadly these are going to my boss because I know she’ll love them even more then me! With some steel wool & GoJo, these babies will clean up very nicely!

And finally we come to the stuffed animals, they were all $1.99/piece & heading for the ebay store. Well not Pirate Stitch because Micah has claimed him as his own, even though he has never seen Lilo & Stitch!

Can’t get much thriftier….

July 18, 2011 – 8:39 pm

I was planning to show off my thrift store & yard sale hauls from this past weekend but well I didn’t even go to any! Plans got goofed up and I just didn’t get to make it to any sales. But I’ve been wanting to show some things I got a couple of weeks ago while on my way home from dropping the hubby off at work. It was a Monday morning & I needed to drop some mail off on the way home when I got such a nice surprise. You see my post office is located behind a strip center (lots of dumpsters) & someone just threw all their garage sale stuff away. I wasn’t jumping in the trash or anything, I just happened to notice some very large items next to a dumpster as I was exiting the parking lot.

spacer

So yes, I turned my little car around & shoveled the items I wanted in my car. I skipped over so many things that were just waiting for a new home. But this lamp & huge picture frame are the only things I was awake enough to grab. They are uglies waiting for their extreme Pam Del makeovers!!! The huge frame….well I’m up in the air on what to do with it, maybe if I had some suggestions it would help me figure out what direction to go in with it.

That was my lame attempt for requesting comments.

Can’t stop me from looking…

June 21, 2011 – 2:53 pm

So I’ve decided not to buy any more pieces of furniture that need work until I’m done with my current projects…well they don’t NEED work but need it to live in my house. Right now I have six pieces waiting to be finished…yeah I have a problem so stop looking at me that way. Out of the six, three have been started and are over 75% done. But I can’t get over to the “finished” hump. To finish these three projects I need painters tape, more fabric & patience (to sew the covering for a chair, outsource to grandma???) Even though I’ve told myself no more pieces until I get all my projects done, I can’t help looking on craigslist for goodies that want a makeover. Currently I’m eying these pieces….

Dresser on the left is $60 | Dress on the right is $40

Any of these would look so slick with paint, new handles & a bit of creativity. Do you notice a trend? Yes, they are all dressers. We don’t have one but we also don’t have a truck to haul a heavy dresser in. Which one could you envision as one hot piece of furniture once it gets a makeover? Can anyone guess which one I would pick if it could just *poof* into my house?

Weekend Thrifty Finds…

June 14, 2011 – 7:26 pm

So a lot of you who follow me on twitter know that I’ve been thrifting a lot. Mostly for resell but their are a few things I come across and just want to keep for myself…you know until the next awesome find comes along. First up is the piano bench I picked up for a mere four bucks. Yes. I said it. FOUR BUCKS. I know it’s rough & needs a bit of TLC. But I’m guessing nobody else found this piece as charming as I did because it was sitting on its lonesome at an estate sale. This is a sale where someone clearly did their homework because I couldn’t make a dollar off reselling anything I would have bought there! But this baby…yes I see some potential in this sweet little thing. At first I thought the legs were bent…but they’re all evenly like that….they were MEANT to look as if they were collapsing in. My dad reassured me he’s seen many pieces where the legs went in like this (he use to own an antique store). So…score? Yes, score since that is one thing I don’t have to fix on this baby. It looks all cosmetic. Hooray!

Next up is an adorable foot stool, it’s so tiny & adorable. Micah has claimed this piece as his. He likes putting his bowl of fruit on it, having a seat next to it & munching the day away. I bought this at a very lame garage sale, the home the garage sale was being held at looked so ridiculously expensive. And the garage was FULL of antiques, NICE ones but they weren’t even considering selling them….oooookkkkk then close your garage door? Well I picked this little guy up and asked the couple how much, you know since nothing at all was priced. Well the woman looks at her husband, he shrugs & then she tells me “Well that’s really old…” Insert me just smiling, blinking & waiting patiently. “Well I guess I could sell it for…..$8? That’s REALLY cheap because it’s a REALLLLLY old piece, it’s french!” And then I say “Well I was thinking more like $4, what do you think?” She looks insulted & looks at her husband. Her husband’s reaction? Well he whispers “TAKE the $4 and get rid of it or it’s going to sit in our garage for another 2 years if you don’t!!! Plus that rope stuff is broken!!” Where she reacts “Well SOME people LIKE that look” & huffs. I of course butt in and tell her that I’m planning to rip the woven pieces off anyways since it isn’t original to the stool. She huffs “How about $5?”, I pull a fiver out of my wallet & run out of there as fast as possible!! I just can’t help being a bit of a butthead sometimes, it was all in good bargaining fun though.

spacer

Alright now here is the million dollar question….would you paint, stain or just leave these pieces be?! Fabric? Color, patterns, etc? Tell me what you envision for these pieces? COMMENT & let me know! Or @ me on twitter! I’d love to hear what you would like seen done to these pieces!

I’m sharing this post on Apron Thrift Girl’s Thrift Share Monday…even though I didn’t post on Monday….
