Rays Sign Former Big League Catcher To Minor League Deal

Chris Gimenez Cork Gaines 2 Comments »

spacer According to Roger Mooney (via Twitter), the Rays have signed Chris Gimenez, a catcher that player 24 games with the Mariners in 2011.

Gimenez was given a minor league contract and will be invited to spring training. Which means he better start packing his things, because pitchers and catchers report in four days!

Gimenez hit .203 with a .314 OBP in 59 at bats last year. He also hit .265 with a .357 OBP in 49 triple-A at bats. Prior to the Mariners, he also played parts of the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the Indians.

Phil Rogers Looks At 2012 Rays But Would Prefer To Make Sh*t Up About The Stadium Issue

Bill Foster, New Stadium Cork Gaines 11 Comments »

spacer The column is entitled “Power Rankings: No. 4 Rays.” So naturally, we would expect this piece to be about how the Rays will perform in the AL East this season. Good lord do we feel like friggin’ idiots. Not. Even. Close.

The entire column is about whether or not the Rays will “vanish” from the Tampa Bay area.

The Rays are dead in the water at Tropicana Field, and even St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster knows it. That’s why he finally is dropping his cold-war approach to a lease that Vince Naimoli signed as he was paying MLB’s expansion franchise price of $130 million in 1995.

Huh? When did this happen? Just last month, Foster came out of a meeting with Stuart Sternberg “confident that Sternberg and the Rays organization are prepared to honor their current contract through 2027.” Does that sound like Foster is dropping his “cold-war approach”? Or does it sound more like Khrushchev pounding his shoe*?

Whatever Richard Justice was for Sternberg, apparently Rogers is for Mayor Bill Foster. In other words, we, the fans, are getting played (and screwed) by both sides.

Go on…

Foster has shown a willingness to negotiate an early end to the lease, which would allow the Rays to explore a stadium in downtown Tampa or near the intersection of I-4 and I-75, east of Tampa.

ARE YOU F#@%ING KIDDING ME?!? Did Phil Rogers just make this shit up? First of all, WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE 2012 RAYS? Second of all, SHUT UP! Just SHUT. THE EFF. UP!

Foster has never been willing to allow the Rays to explore a stadium in Tampa. THAT’S THE ENTIRE PROBLEM.

*head hits desk*

Rogers goes on to speculate about the Rays moving (“Portland, Ore., is the best market but [Read More...]

David Price on Joe Maddon’s extension (via Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times):

“Joe is a players’ manager and I love playing for him…I’m happy he got an extension. My turn.”

We used to think the Rays missed the boat on this one. But after seeing what David Price “settled for” in avoiding arbitration this season ($4.4 million), it might actually be a possibility.

Get ‘er done!

Looks Like Raymond Will Have A New Feline Friend On The Sidelines This Season

DJ Kitty, Raymond Cork Gaines 6 Comments »

It looks like Raymond is getting a new partner-in-crime.  The picture posted below comes via the Twitter account of Jonathan Gantt, a member of the Rays’ Communications department. And yes, that is DJ Kitty “in the flesh.”

We still need to see the full costume, but it does appear that Kitty is wearing Assless Chaps. Just sayin’…

Jeff Salazar

The Rays added two more players to their spring training roster, including former big league outfielder Jeff Salazar (via Marc Topkin). Salazar has played 168 big league games over four seasons with three teams. The last time he was in the big leagues was 2009 with the Pirates. Last year, he hit .228 with a .355 OBP in triple.

The Rays also added Brad Coon, an outfielder that spent the 2011 season in double-A and triple-A for the Dodgers, hitting .269 with a .390 OBP combined.

In Least Surprising News Of The Year, The Rays Give Joe Maddon A 3-Year Extension.

Joe Maddon Cork Gaines 2 Comments »

We knew Joe Maddon was going to get an extension before the season started, and we already knew it would be for three years. And now, according to Marc Topkin of TampaBay.com, it’s official. The only thing we didn’t know is how much Maddon will make. And it will probably be a while before that info is leaked. Our guess is still three-years, $9 million.

[UPDATE] We laid the challenge and Topkin delivered. Maddon’s deal is for $6 million over three years. That’s a steal considering Ozzie Guillen is getting $4 million per year, Mike Scioscia gets $5 million per season, and Joe Girardi is at $3 million annually. Then again, those guys have all won a World Series, and Maddon’s salary is still up over 250% since he was making $550,000 when he was first hired by the Rays.
