genres of dance / electronic music: 5 main types

Posted on by The Knowledge Stylist

Welcome back everyone.

Okay, today we are going to start with a broad overview of dance / electronic music and the styles found within. Keep in mind this is a fluid and flexible definition process–much of dance music can morph and blend from one style to another. Also keep in mind this is dance-club / DJ-type  dance music being described, not ball room dancing or tango or anything like that. This is modern, nightclub, raving, kind of dance music. Okay? Great!

The most important types of dance music today are:

Trance

House

Electro House

Hard Dance

and Chillout.

Why are these the most important types of dance music? Perhaps it is because these are The Knowledge Stylist’s favorites! Beatport will be used as a reference for these genres so you can go to and hear this music.

In the days to come each of these genres will be defined and described further. Believe me, The Knowledge Stylist is going to do you a huge favor by distilling these down into “just” the 5 categories listed above. Distillation is vital, because dance and electronic music is a huge universe. Don’t believe it? Just visit Ishkur’s guide to electronic music and be prepared to have a head spinning moment or hour. His website is techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ .

Til tomorrow!

Why is the music called “Chillout?” It sounds as if it would be slower, but, cause it it club music, is that the case?

Thanks for the breakdown on the main types of modern dance music. I’ve had many a sleepless nights listening to these types of music and thanks to all the huge sound systems over the years, I have about 50% hearing in my left ear. All worth it though!
