Reason behind passion for road biking?: After many years as a runner (and a few as a triathlete / duathlete) an achilles injury led me back to cycling. In the early days it was all about having fun and I thoroughly enjoyed hacking around the Sussex countryside with a group of guys, even though we met at 6 am on Saturdays at Brighton Pier. Believe me, after rising at 5.30 am each work day, there had to be something special about this weekly group-ride to get me out of bed that early at the weekend, and I owe a lot to those guys. It wasn't long before my competitive spirit returned and soon I had bought a new bike (or two), and became a 'tester'. Time trials were my weekly challenge and even the prospect of racing up and down the Nation's soul-less dual-carriageways did little to dampen my enthusiasm. I achieved many goals and thoroughly enjoyed testing myself in the purest form, me against the clock.

In 2010 I had the privilege of participating in both The London-Paris and The Alpine Challenge and had an amazing time. This exposed me to new physical tests and mental experiences, and was a glimpse of how much I still want to do. I hope that my drive and desire continue to prosper and that I have many more miles of fun to come.

The event was organised to an exceptionally high standard. The day to day support (out-riders, mechanics, lunch, snacks and sports products) was fantastic. Combined with the camaraderie amongst the crew and other riders, this was a very special experience for me and a great personal achievement.

RIDER PROFILE
Name: Ian Holmes
Age: 42
Occupation: Police Officer
Reason behind passion for road biking?: I ride for Virgin Active Health clubs, competing in road racing events during the season. I got into cycling through Triathlon back in the 90's.

I moved onto Mountain bike racing and later road racing following an injury that prevented me from running, it's a great way to remain fit and competitive without the impact.

The Alpine challenge 2010 was the perfect end to the race season and was the most enjoyable 4 days I have spent on a bike. Fantastic mountain climbs, first class support and above all great fun. See you in 2011!!
