What you should know:

We don’t do gimmicks, and we aren’t going to waste your time with programs that don’t work. We are results driven and we are passionate about making a difference in your health, fitness and performance. We have spent years studying and understanding how the body works. We believe that health and fitness must be approached from a holistic view and that there is no one size fits all method that works long-term. Every person is unique in their challenges and pathway to optimum health and fitness. We bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to each and every individual. Our passion is guiding each and every person along that journey.

Why the name Adversity?

Adversity is defined by Webster as “a state, condition, or instance of serious or continued difficulty or adverse fortune.” At first thought, you may ask, why would anyone name a business after something with such a negative connotation. However, I believe adversity is what makes us stronger, not only in the gym but in life. This article says it best…

Adversity – Friend or Foe?

Some of us have a tendency to get frustrated at adversity. We think of how much better our life would be if we could just have smooth sailing all of the time.

The funny thing about adversity is that without it, we simply wouldn’t grow. It’s the process of overcoming adversity that brings out the best in us, that challenges us, and allows us to become stronger.

Think about it in terms of weightlifting. If you never lift a dumbbell, or do a bench press, how do you think you’re ever going to get stronger? You need that opposition (the weight of the dumbbell or barbell) to push against (or lift) in order to gain the strength you’re looking for. The same is true of life. If you never face opposition (adversity) then you’ll never grow or learn how to overcome such challenges.

I know that when you’re in the midst of a troubling time it’s not in the front of your mind that what you’re going through is a learning experience that will aid you in the future, but that is exactly the case. As you become more and more proficient at dealing with strife and adversity, the better you are at dealing with every day challenges. The stronger and more adept that you become, the more wisdom and understanding of life you retain.

So, as you face adversity on your journey through life, face it head on, revel in the chance to prove yourself and enjoy the challenge much the same way a professional athlete enjoys a strenuous workout. Once you overcome the challenge, and I have no doubt you WILL overcome the challenge, you’ll feel the satisfaction of having done it!

    Dave,

Its Anthony from CrossFit Hell’s Kitchen in your old hometown NYC. I just wanted to say congrats on your new box. I know you will be awesome out there. I read your blog 365 Days of Squatting as well, great cause. Keep up the good work. If ever back in NYC, stop by and say hello. Maybe I can get you to do a Strongman/lifting seminar for my guys as well.
