Despite modern advancements in research, Wayne State University continues to perform inhumane heart failure experiments on dogs. These dogs are subjected to forced treadmill exercises while enduring unrelieved pain and distress from multiple extreme surgeries, implanted medical devices, and induced cardiovascular conditions.
Successful cardiological-related research can now be attained through more humane alternatives to this testing. The use of dogs in cruel experiments is unjustifiable and in violation of both state and federal animal cruelty laws.

Queenie was a shelter dog, sold by a Class B dealer to the university. After suffering through painful surgeries and induced high blood pressure, she was subjected to months of cruel experimentation. In spite of showing obvious signs of pain and distress, researchers continued to force her participation in lengthy, excruciating treadmill sessions.
Records indicate the medication she was given to relieve pain was inadequate and inappropriate. A broken implanted device retracted into her body, rendering her useless as a lab subject. The university then killed her, as they do with all dogs that are no longer useful to their program.
Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) filed legal complaints with the USDA and to the Wayne County prosecutor’s office, requesting that Wayne State be charged with violating state and federal animal cruelty laws. The USDA claims no violations were found during a subsequent inspection. No charges have filed against the university and dogs are still undergoing unnecessary painful treatment by the university’s research department.
There are hundreds more dogs like Queenie suffering as victims of these experiments. Modern technological advancements currently provide for the use of human-based epidemiological studies, clinical trials and computer modeling technology. The university, however, has no current plans to change their research protocols and has scheduled additional research projects.
Sign the letter to Alan Gilmour, president of Wayne State University, requesting he immediately halt the needless use of dogs in the university’s inhumane heart failure experiments.
