Chinese New Year 4710, or 2012 in the Western calendar, is the Year of the Water Dragon.

The Dragon represents the fourth year in the 12 year cycle of the Chinese zodiac.

Like the houses of the zodiac in Western astrology, the animals of Chinese astrology are thought by many to dictate personality traits or, in the wider scope of things, even impact world events in any year they rule.

Dragons, and those born under compatible signs, will likely benefit from luck or good fortune during a Dragon year — i.e., in 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, and 2012.

Characteristics of The Dragon

The three words that best describe the dragon?
Charismatic, tempestuous, and lucky.

In fact, for centuries in Chinese culture the dragon has been considered one of the luckiest signs of the zodiac. Indeed, dragons often may spend their lives going from from success to success with a firm belief that they are masters of all they survey.

Conformity is for others. Dragons go their own way! So if you ask a dragon, luck has little to do with it.

Not shy by any means, dragons are often faulted for running off at the mouth with a swaggering overconfidence. Their generous natures can also result in betting unwisely on a 'sure' thing. This may sometimes result in uncharacteristic personal misfortune. With dragons, however, bad luck never seems to last for long. Undaunted, the confident dragon will simply continue on its way with unbounded determination.

In business, dragons are honest and straightforward. Too straightforward, perhaps, as dragons are not known to suffer fools gladly. At the very least, they will always let you know where you stand, and can be relied upon to be always forthright in financial dealings.

Dragons are equally dynamic in love, and their passionate attentions will sweep any object of their affection quickly off their feet. Yet, once settled in a domestic relationship, dragons are usually steadfast and true, and grateful to have a quiet place to cool their fiery natures.

Dragons may also reveal a surprisingly tender heart to confidantes, and as trusted friends no more generous companions can be found than loyal dragons.

Cross them, however, and woe to those who have experienced a tongue-lashing from these hot-headed creatures!

General predictions for the Year of the Dragon

The year of the dragon is traditionally associated with new beginnings and good fortune.

Those with entrepreneurial spirit are particularly favored to see much success in the coming year.

Generally, it's predicted that any new venture may benefit from the outstanding luck often associated with the dragon. Therefore, 2012 will be a very good year to get married, have children, or start a new business.

As the world suffers through one of the worst economic calamities in recent memory, bold new leadership will help ease the circumstances of those suffering most from recent financial setbacks.

Since 2012 is the year of the Water Dragon, the liquid element is predicted to calm the dragon's usually tempestuous nature, and will give a thoughtful perspective to the plight of the less fortunate.

Dragons who can pursue their own passionate ambitions while meeting the needs of others are best suited to navigating the year ahead. Those compatible with the Dragon — the Rat and the Snake in particular — will also find 2012's circumstances inspiring them to greater personal happiness and professional success.
