Men's basketball named OCAA Men's team of the week

The Algonquin Thunder have done twice what no other team has been able to do during the 2011-12 regular season. Algonquin defeated Centennial (16-2) for the second time this season, a 77-69 decision at home on Feb. 10. Algonquin then avenged an earlier overtime loss to Fleming-Peterborough, winning 60-51 at home on Feb. 11. With a 15-3 record, the Thunder have already secured their spot at next month's OCAA championship tournament, hosted by Algonquin.

Sandre Bascoe named OCAA female basketball athlete of the week

spacer The Algonquin Thunder have won 10 straight and Sandre Bascoe (Ottawa) is a big reason why. The third-year forward earned a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds in a 66-46 win over Durham on Jan. 27. Bascoe added another 10 points and seven rebounds in addition to five steals in a 70-39 win over Loyalist on Jan. 28. Bascoe is among the league leaders averaging 17.3 points per game. Algonquin leads the OCAA East region with a record of 10-1.

 

Thunder women's basketball named OCAA female team of the week

The Algonquin Thunder avenged an earlier loss to previously unbeaten Seneca with a 53-47 road win on Jan. 20. Sandre Bascoe (Ottawa) led the way with 11 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and one assist. Bascoe is averaging 18 points per game to lead her teammates. Algonquin has now won eight straight games, sits on top of the OCAA East region standings, and is the No. 1-ranked team in the province.

spacer Third-year player Jori Armishaw (Ottawa) led Algonquin to a pair of home victories. Armishaw contributed 11 offensive points on seven kills, three service aces and one stuff block in a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-13, 26-24) win over Seneca. She then earned 10 points on eight kills and two aces in a 3-2 (12-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-17, 15-7) comeback win over Georgian. Algonquin (10-4) has won seven straight, and have moved up to third place in the OCAA East region.

TORONTO - A look at stats and figures from around the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA).

20 - Number of points Georgian men's basketball player Shane Rowe (Barrie, Ont.) scored in a 74-61 loss to Centennial on Wednesday. It marks the least number of points that he scored in a game in six tries this season. Rowe has earned 30 points on two occasions, as he has proven to be Georgian's greatest offensive threat in 2011-12.

6 - Number of wins by the Lambton women's basketball team in their return to OCAA this season. The Lions currently sit in fifth place in the OCAA West region, with the top six teams advancing to the post-season. Courtney Lundy (Sarnia, Ont.) leads Lambton with 133 points. Lambton previously did not have a women's basketball program for nearly two decades.

9 - Number of consecutive wins by the Nipissing men's volleyball team to begin the OCAA regular season. Duncan Cairns (Georgetown, Ont.) leads Nipissing averaging 3.3 points per set. The Lakers put their undefeated season on the line this Sunday when they host defending OCAA champion Humber.

11 - Number of consecutive wins by the Humber women's volleyball team to begin the OCAA regular season. Kelly Nyhof (Georgetown, Ont.) leads Humber averaging 4.4 points per set. The Hawks put their undefeated season on the line this Sunday when they visit Nipissing in a rematch of the last six OCAA championship gold medal games.

1,010 - Number of points the Mohawk men's basketball team has scored during the 2011-12 regular season. Mohawk became the first OCAA team to hit the 1,000-point mark. Aminu Bello (Hamilton, Ont.) has contributed 25 percent of Mohawk's totals, with 256 points to his credit.

2 - Number of overtime games in OCAA women's basketball this season, both taking place at Mohawk. The host team is .500 in these games, recently losing 73-69 to Lambton on Wednesday. Mohawk defeated Niagara 75-69 in overtime last November.

5 - Number of undefeated teams in OCAA basketball and volleyball entering play this weekend. Along with the aforementioned Nipissing men's and Humber women's volleyball teams, the Seneca women's basketball, Algonquin men's volleyball and Cambrian women's volleyball teams all have unblemished regular season records.

157 - Number of kills by Cambrian women's volleyball player Shawna Metcalf (Azilda, Ont.) in 12 matches this regular season. The OCAA record for kills in a season is 259 set by Metcalf in 2009-10.

729 - Updated OCAA men's volleyball career kills record held by Loyalist's Kyle Donnan (Pickering, Ont.). Donnan surpassed the old record of 719 set by Redeemer'sRyan Talsma last weekend.

159 - Updated OCAA men's volleyball career service aces record held by Loyalist's Matt Woods (Pickering, Ont.). Woods surpassed the old record of 133 set by Trent'sIan Rettie earlier this season.

Men's volleyball capture Timbertown invitational title

spacer Calgary, AB. - The Algonquin Thunder Men's Volleyball has started 2012 with an impressive Championship performance at the TimberTown Invitational Tournament at Mount Royal University in Calgary, January 2-4.  Algonquin opened the tournament with a straight set victory over Red River College 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-23) then defeated MacEwen University 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20) to end pool play.  In the Medal Round of play it took back-to-back five set thrillers to capture the 2012 title.  Algonquin defeated Memorial University in the Semi-Final 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 15-9) to advance to the finals against the host Mount Royal defeating the Cougars 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 15-7).

Thunder Rugby's Jon nadler chosen for national U-19 Squad

spacer Algonquin Thunder Prop Jon Nadler has been selected to represent Canada on the Rugby Canada Under-19 tour of England from February 22 to March 4, 2012.

The side will face Welbeck Sixth Form Military College on February 26, Leicester Tigers Academy on February 29 and Northhampton Saints Academy on March 3. Thunder Men's Rugby Training sessions

The Algonquin Men's Rugby Program is now preparing for the 2012 season. The goal of the 2012 season is to improve on last seasons OCAA silver medal and win gold for Algonquin.

Mike Adams - OCAA Volleyball Male Student-Athlete of the Week

spacer TORONTO - The following have been named Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) volleyball student-athletes of the week for the period between Monday, Nov. 28 and Wednesday, Dec. 7.

MALE: Mike Adams, Algonquin

Third-year right side Mike Adams (Barrie, Ont.) totaled 29 offensive points in two matches as Algonquin improved its regular season record to 10-0. Adams earned 10 points on nine kills and one service ace in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-22) win over Durham on Dec. 2. He followed this effort with 19 points, including 15 kills and four stuff blocks, in a 3-0 (25-8, 26-24, 25-19) sweep of Loyalist on Dec. 3. Algonquin has lost only one set all season.
