Myth #3: More Deskwork Equals More Learning

Myth #3: More Deskwork Equals More Learning

People often get a good feeling when they see children quietly in neat rows, reading texts and completing worksheets. They assume that the longer a student spends sitting “on task” at a desk, the more learning is happening. The reality is that sitting still for so long actually stifles the brain and that by leaving the desk, the student can have much more memorable learning experiences.

Sitting at a desk, the student is mostly dealing with one form of learning – symbols. These symbols are the letters and numbers that make up the textbooks and workbooks that most children are consigned to use. But there are some real downfalls to relying on symbols only. For example, read the following paragraph:

“These are spiny, hard-skinned animals that live on the rocky sea floor. These invertebrates are NOT fish; they are echinoderms. They move very slowly along the seabed, using hundreds of tiny tube feet. There are over 2,000 different species worldwide.”

What do you think this organism looks like? When I share this information as part of a lecture, I usually have someone come up and draw a picture of what they imagine organism looks like. They usually draw a blobby little creature with spikes.  I then reveal that the organism is actually a starfish or sea star. This illustrates the fallibility of learning with text only.
