Frequently Asked Questions

Old themes

Where can I get your old themes?
Sorry but they’re gone forever. I wanted to start afresh so that I could regulate content the quality of my themes and so they all have common appearance options. I’m slowly remaking the most popular old themes. Here’s a list and their respective new versions or plans.

I have a question about one of your old themes, where can I ask you about it?
I’m sorry but you can’t. They’re finished, done, caput. I won’t answer any questions about any of my old themes, not whatsoever. All I can give is the following information – No, I cannot send you the code to any of them. No, you can’t use parts of their code in your own themes. Yes, you can keep using them as long as you want. No, you cannot and should not remove my credit from them.

I purchased a copy of your Ciceron theme, can I still receive support for it?
Yes. Firstly, I’m sorry about not continuing to update it. Please email me from the address you purchased it from if you need help with it. I’ve also stated that buyers of the Ciceron theme can have free copies of any of my future themes, email the above address and I’ll register your username as a buyer.

Installing themes

Ok, I’ve got the code, now what do I do?
Go to your customize page, which is likely to be located here. Click the ‘edit html’ button beneath the theme tumbnail and replace all of that text with the code in the box below. Click ‘update preview’ and then ‘appearance’ and ‘save’; a real preview of the theme and appearance options of it aren’t visible until you refresh the page. So save it and then refresh and it’ll have an accurate preview and you can change the options.

I pasted the code in but the layout isn’t right at all..?
Basically with the new customize page the appearance options don’t save with the ‘update preview’ button. You have to save the theme and then refresh for the preview and your page to look normal, and then you can change the appearance options.

I pasted the code in but some things from the demo are missing, like the background.. what?
The demo isn’t a fresh install of the code- some of the appearance options are modified for an appealing diplay. All the background for example are my own photos, that I’ve just used for the demos and aren’t included in the installs; if you want to use one please message me directly.

Premium themes

If I buy one of your premium themes will I be able to install it immediately?
Yes. Once you’ve registered your username and paid instantly via paypal  your username will be on my system and you’ll be able to download the code and install it with the instructions on that page

I’m not from England, can I still buy one of the premium themes through Paypal?
Don’t worry about the conversion – Paypal will automatically convert the price into your currency using the retail exchange rate, there are no extra fees.

I’ve lost the code to the premium theme I bought, can I get the code again?
Yes. Go to the theme’s download page and enter your username in the box near the bottom and you’ll be able to download another copy

My tumblr isn’t working properly and has a message called ‘theme theif’ on it, wth?
One out of four things has happened.

  1. You bought it with a username that isn’t the username you’re using it with, you may have registered it with the .tumblr.com or may have just left that field blank. Go to the theme’s download page here and you can change whatever you registered it with to your actual username.
  2. You’ve gotten the code of somebody else – that’s the whole point; if you haven’t bought it, it won’t work for you.
  3. You’ve changed your url – my tracking system means the theme will only work for the theme you registered it for, if you want to change your username’s registration go to the theme’s purchase page on this site and follow the instructions.
  4. You’ve changed your ‘unique theme id’ – click ‘reset defaults’ after the list of appearance options to retrieve it.

Will you refund my theme purchase?
Maybe. I will refund it if you’ve bought more than one copy of the theme by accident, or declare problems you have with it that makes it unfit for your use. I will not refund any payment if you’re currently using the theme on the site it’s registered with or if you made the purchase over 30 days ago.

Specific theme questions

How do I add extra links in the sidebar/header?
On your customize page there’s a tab underneath the appearance options called ‘pages’, go there and make a new one and you can make it redirect or whatever and check ‘show a link to this page’.

Can you help me customize the theme?
Probably not. Learn how to do it yourself.

Will you tell me which of your themes ~~~ is using?
Yes, because they’re so customisable it can be hard to identify which one. Don’t be anonymous though.

Other web design

Do you make custom themes?
Yes in theory, but it depends on how busy I am and I’m usually very busy. So I’ll have to say no for now unless you want to proposition me with a good pitch.

Can you make my non-tumblr website?
More likely than making a custom theme. I’m doing a lot of experimentation with wordpress (like what this site is made from!), I’m pretty handy with indexhibit and slowly learning about making my own database-driven sites. If you want a portfolio made in any of these I’d be happy to do that. Message me with information about it and I’ll give you a quote, but I can’t guarantee my availability.

Miscellaneous

I’ve seen somebody that’s taken the credit off your theme, shall I tell you?
Hell yes, message me whenever you see this. On the new themes the credit is just a little square symbol in the bottom right though, make sure that’s not there.

How did you learn to make tumblr themes?
Copied from an ask from March 2011 – It all started at the age of 11 (2005ish). I was on holiday in Cornwall when everyone went on a walk but I had a cold so decided to stay home. I was just messing around on my mother’s laptop when I came across a lot of graphics&anime websites, it fascinated me. So I came up with my own concept called ‘The Pink Pixie’ which never got to publication because I just had no idea how to make what I wanted to. Later on (2006/7?) I made ‘Mood Mambo’ which was a little site about a cartoon character called Mambo which I drew (somewhere between Cinamoroll and Care Bears) and related pixels and blinkies, I don’t think anyone even knew it existed. Those were the times when brs were like god concepts and custom scrollbars and divs were difficult. In 2008 I made something called ‘The Tacit Beauty’ which was a fashion blog but like had static coding.. it made no sense I didn’t understand anything beyond html and css. I then transfered it to blogspot (omg it’s still there, but I gave up when I messed up the theme) later on that year. At the beginning of 2009 I got bored of the long posts so made another blogspot- the birth of pouretrebelle. It was basically like tumblr, one photo posts or quotes, but on blogspot. I didn’t know tumblr existed. I edited my theme for that but nothing more than simple html and css as before and maybe a dynamic drive script or two. In August 2009 I opened The CD Experiment with big aspirations but little substance, just some nice curved-curved border boxes with links to empty projects. The next month I switched to tumblr full time, but didn’t try any themeing until about March 2010. I’ve basically learned everything that I know now beyond basic css and html in the last year and everything has been by trial and error. Endless amounts of time just testing and tweaking and testing and discovering and being confused beyond relief about things that now seem simple. I see people on here trying to make their own little network and not succeeding but hell it took me 6 years and about 5 failed attempts to make something people actually want to see, so if you are in that boat you just have to persevere. I have no doubt that in a years time I’ll be ten times as knowledgeable in web design as I am now, it’s pretty much an exponential process.
Update from now –  Since writing that I’ve learned a lot about php, mysql and database systems, I’ve transferred my whole theme site to WordPress and in three months it’s had 100,000 theme downloads. I’ve began working much more intimately with jquery and made scripts for infinite scrolling, my own form of masonry, high-res photosets, flickr, twitter, last.fm and other quirks. I’d say that my final statement from March is being fulfilled.
