Guest puzzle: Down the Food Chain
Wil Zambole writes in with this one:
Name a restaurant chain in twelve (unique) letters. If you rearrange all twelve letters alphabetically, it’ll contain two stretches of alphabetically consecutive letters, one three letters long, and one four letters long. What’s the restaurant?

With pixel-projects they imagine what it would be like to lift the pixelized universe from the screen into the real world. Composing in pixel is not solitary work in the computer anymore, but rather a game, a pixel puzzle, where both of them can intervene pixel by pixel and where everything is possible.

Labyrinth: Secrets of the Pedway
Waxwing Puzzle Co. bills itself “Adventure Tourism in Chicago”. Their signature game, Labyrinth, is…
a real-time game played over the course of a few hours in the Chicago Pedway, a system of underground tunnels beneath the heart of downtown. Players will compete against other teams in an open or private event to be the first to track down four “marks,” Waxwing confederates waiting in hidden locations who will give each team a challenge and a piece of the final clue. The first team to find all four “marks” is the winner.
It costs $20 per person. The next one is being held Saturday February 18th. I’m out of town, so someone will have to go and report back on how awesome it is.

Democratic Chess is a new interpretation of the traditional chess game. New ways of playing are made possible by the shape of the figures. Pieces taken are not eliminated but stacked, thus creating new figures, which have more abilities. For example, a knight or even a second queen can be made from several pawns etc.

When I first heard [Duncan] described as a “master palindromist,” I imagined, briefly, some sort of governing body with an esoteric ranking structure, doling out titles like “grandmaster” in chess. But no. For Duncan the title is self-proclaimed. “When I say I’m a master palindromist, there are two answers for what that means,” he explained. “One is that it means, when it comes to palindrome-writing, I know what I’m doing. The other, slightly longer, slightly more combative answer is that it means you shouldn’t confuse me with any of those garden-variety, ‘Madam I’m Adam’ hacks who couldn’t paint my shadow.
