Hot off the heels of dressing Madonna’s Super Bowl XLVI halftime performance, Falguni & Shane Peacock showed their Fall 2012 collection during New York Fashion Week. If the Super Bowl was any indication, Falguni & Shane Peacock’s Fall 2012 collection bore the same edge and look-at-me-attitude. The only difference was that there was a darkness to it that called to mind an image of a warrior woman with its tribal prints and embellishments on sheer (and sometimes daring) fabrics. Chevrons, angular pieces and geometric prints all remained consistent throughout Lela Rose’s Fall 2012 collection. Rose cites inspiration from Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava who values romance and fluidity even in his architecture work primarily dealing with steel and straight lines. This inspiration translated into a Fall collection with a lot of graphic prints, linear cuts and movement. Models wearing looks from Candela’s Fall 2012 collection were posed on what looked like a setup of wooden mine posts, complete with lanterns and flowers strewn around for a rustic feel. Drinks were even served in tin cups to take the fashion presentation experience to another level. Overhearing Candela’s designer, it was pointed out that the inspiration for her collection was the Gold Rush. There is definitely a dreamy Western feel to the collection with an instance of a cowboy button-up shirts, lace dresses, chunky knits, booties and flowy prairie skirts. The most attractive piece of the collection was a blue and silver sequined shift dress. If that dress was the focal point of the collection then it could be deduced that she represents what the mine was built for. More »

Having only been exposed to Josie Natori’s luxury lingerie line, it was quite the treat to be able to experience her third ready-to-wear collection at a presentation held at the Rubin Museum of the Arts. I also have to admit — being Filipino American, I was quite excited to see the work of a Filipino designer in the flesh. Styled by Annabel Tollman, Josie Natori’s Fall 2012 collection was inspired by Mongolia and the Silk Road. The inspiration is most apparent in the various kimono wrap dresses,obi-like belts and sashes, Mongolian fur bolero jackets and embroidered lace cocoon coats. More »
