Permission Slips

spacer One aspect of my much-shared anxiety has been the necessary ability to let go of stress after a certain point. If I can’t survive it, I let it go. I think I really saw this pattern emerge in college as I was suddenly not so smart that I didn’t have to work and had a very rude awakening. So… I would just say “oh well,” after a certain point if I wasn’t going to get it done or pass the test or whatever failure was imminent. The only loophole is that I need to reach out to someone I love and trust and sort of ask permission. It’s ridiculous, but great. During college, I would often call my best friend Kristen and just say, “I can’t study anymore, I just can’t. I’m not going to pass….” And she would tell me that she loves me no matter what and that it’s not the end of the world. Permission granted. And often that freedom was enough to loosen the vice grip of distress and rebellion and allow me to get the job done.

Really, it was a way of re-gaining perspective that it was truly not the end of the world. Amazingly easy to lose sometimes. I would call her for permission/reassurance for other things too… that it’s okay to need things from people, it’s okay not to take care of everyone especially at my own expense. Lots of things.

So, I got to thinking about what’s been helping me lately and the “permissions” I’ve had to give myself in order to get my weight loss going (finally.) And naturally, I wanted to pass them along to anyone out there who needs them. I honestly have used each of these more than once to lose these first 30 pounds.

spacer Permission to make it all about you. (expires in one hour, and can be over-ridden only by life threatening situations involving someone you are sworn to protect.)

spacer Permission to rest during the day.

spacer Permission to leave dirty dishes in the sink (until further notice)

spacer Permission to shop for something fun and/or frivolous. $10 limit. You might have to work at it, but it can be done.

spacer Permission to eat whatever you want (between 10-10:14 a.m. 10 days from today.) Remember to schedule an extra workout that day!

And a few other things that might help:

Permission to expect more of others. (May be combined with the elusive ability to demand more.)

Permission to read a book during the day

Permission to have coffee with a friend/ chat with a friend

Permission to fart around finding clip art and playing in photoshop making “permission slips” when you should be doing almost anything else.

And Permission to enjoy every moment of your day no matter what you do.

Did I miss anything?

It’s a wrap for round 2 of NaNoProgMo!

Hosted by Lauren from LaurenWayne.com / Hobo Mama and Teresa from Write On, Mom! / Mom Grooves It’s the end of the second NaNoProgMo. Here’s my tally for the month, not what I’d aimed for, but certainly more than it would have been. For me, that’s the whole idea… Progress. I even got some great…

I’d love feedback for my picture book

I’ve been sitting with this children’s story (picture book) for at least 10 years now. I can see it clearly. I kind of love it. Often that comes from the rhythms I feel as I read. They take me back to a moment when I was creative and flowing. It’s so hard to break them…

Doing my time (again) in Nursery School

I went to nursery school with my girl. She’s been having a strange and weirdly regressed time lately. The first day we took her to school, she was totally fine. She said, “Bye,” and waved us off. It was awesome. We were so proud and happy and amazed. We got to spend the next four…

The Half Birthday Mistake…

When Stephen and I were dating 9 years ago, he surprised me by celebrating my 1/2 birthday in May. He gave me half a card, half a cupcake and half a gift. It was a surprise and it was magical. Birthday’s had become such a bore and I really didn’t even want to celebrate. What…
