A few weeks ago I got a bunch of new pens from www.jetpens.com. I’ve been sketching around with them seeing what I like and what I don’t and I thought I’d share it all with you.
First up is the Rotring Tikky Graphic:
It’s a good sketching pen. Ink flow is smooth and generous. The line is even and does not vary in weight too much. So keep that in mind if you want a more tapered look to your line work. It’s also good for note taking as well.
The Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen – Hard:
I was a little reticent about this pen because I’ve been burned by Tombos in the past, but this is a good pen. The tip is hard and pointed and you can get a nice taper to your line. I haven’t drawn too much with it so I don’t know how long that tip will stay sharp, but for now, it’s sitting pretty.
The Pilot Double Sided Brush Pen – Hard Tip:
Love this guy because of the grey on the other end. This has been my go-to sketch pen lately. It’s nice to easily throw in a grey tone under my blacks and add that extra dimension to the sketch. The tips are pointed and sturdy and seems to hold up to the beating I’ve been giving it.
The Pilot Hi-Tec-C Gel Ink Pen – 0.3mm:
A contemporary classic. A great pen for sketching and note taking. It’s a ball point, but the ink is what sets it a part from every other pen. The line is fine and perfect for building up tones. And you can take out the ink insert and put it in one of these, making everything that much cool.
I should add that all of these pens smudge a little on my Moleskine. I think that has more to do with Moleskine paper than it does with the pens, as a test on copy paper showed zero smudging.
Ok, that’s it. Have you used these pens? If so, what do you think of them?

Back in September I posted about a collaboration I’m doing with Industria Mechanika. Remember that? Above are the digital sculpts of the figures by super talented artist Jose Alves da Silva. Just wait until you see the Chompbot.
Oh, and Happy New Year!
