CAS Faculty Win Reseach Awards
Lisa Szczepura, Cynthia Langrall, Maria Moore, and Jun-Hyun Kim Four faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences were presented with University awards for research during the annual Founders Day Convocation on February 16. Dr. Cynthia Langrall, Department of Mathematics, and Dr. Lisa Szczepura, Department of Chemistry, were the recipients of the Outstanding University Researcher Awards. In addition, Dr. Jun-Hyun Kim, Department of Chemistry, and Professor Maria Moore, School of Communication, were honored with University Research Initiative Awards. “We are very proud of the achievements of these four faculty members,” said Dean Simpson. “They are outstanding researchers and teachers, and we are fortunate to count them among the faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences.” The Outstanding University Researcher Awards were established by the University Research Council in 1984 as a way to recognize individuals involved in research. Initiative awards are bestowed upon those early in their academic careers, while Outstanding College and University Awards are given to those who are acknowledged for their research nationally or internationally. |
Hillary Chute to Present English Studies Lecture
Hillary Chute Dr. Hillary Chute, Neubauer Family Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago, will present “Repetition and Regeneration in Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home” at the spring English Studies lecture series. Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2006, is a graphic memoir. The English Studies lecture will be held on Tuesday, February 21 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m, in Stevenson Hall, room 101. Dr. Chute will also lead an informal discussion on graphic narratives on Wednesday, February 22 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Stevenson Hall, room 133. Coffee and pastries will be provided. Uk Heo to Lecture on North Korea
Uk Heo Illinois State University’s International Seminar Series will feature Professor Uk Heo from the Political Science department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He will present North Korea After Kim Jong Il on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from noon to 1 p.m. at the first floor west lounge of the Bone Student Center. Heo has written a number of publications and journal articles on international relations, comparative politics and Asian politics. The seminar series is organized by the Unit for International Linkages, Office of International Studies and Programs and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. Driskell to Speak on Biosensing
Jeremy Driskell Illinois State’s School of Biological Sciences will welcome Jeremy Driskell for a seminar at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, in Felmley Hall of Science, room 105. Driskell, an assistant professor of chemistry at Illinois State, will give a talk titled Biosensing With Gold Nanoparticles. His work focuses on the development of novel diagnostic and biological assays by combining chemistry, nanomaterials and biology. In addition, he is exploring dynamic light scattering for biosensing applications. ISU Academy of Seniors and Mornings with the Professors Scheduled
Lou Perez Illinois State University’s Academy of Seniors and Mornings with the Professors will start in March and continue through June. Sponsored by the Senior Professionals of Illinois State University and affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network, most classes will be held in the Illinois State University Alumni Center at 1101 N. Main St. in Normal. Academy of Seniors offers four classes, and the speakers and their topics include:
