This four-week online public program is an opportunity to journey into the work of Joseph Campbell with Pacifica faculty and a small community of online learners. Participants will be guided through a week-by-week syllabus that includes video lectures, photographs, readings, and faculty-facilitated small discussion groups. The readings for A Cup of Joe are The Hero With A Thousand Faces and two essays from Flight of the Wild Gander. Video lectures feature Pacifica faculty Christine Downing, Dennis Patrick Slattery, Evans Lansing Smith, and Maren Hansen. Online discussion groups are facilitated by Safron Rossi, Jennifer Selig, and Maren Hansen.

The program is limited to 42 participants. No prior study of Joseph Campbell is necessary. Estimated participation time, including lectures, reading, and online discussion will average four to six hours per week, depending on individual reading speed and the extent of participation in online discussion. All weekly activities are arranged at the convenience of the participant.

Faculty Lecturers and Discussion Group Leaders

spacer Christine Downing, Ph.D., is Core Faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute in the Mythological Studies Program, and is a founding faculty member of that program as well as teaching in all other residential programs. A religious studies scholar, her areas of emphasis include Greek Mythology, Women’s Studies, and Psychoanalysis. She has published over a dozen books and articles.


spacer Maren Hansen, Ph.D., is Adjunct Faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute in the Engaged Humanities Program and is a founding faculty member of that program. Her research interests include the psychological function of myth, a psychological approach to myth, and feminine psychology and spirituality. Dr. Hansen is a founding board member of the Joseph Campbell Library and Archives. She studied with Campbell for years and currently teaches a course on Joseph Campbell.


spacer Safron Rossi, Ph.D., is Director of Opus Archives & Research Center, home of the Joseph Campbell Archive, Manuscript Collection and Library. She earned her Ph.D. from Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Mythological Studies program in 2009 and her writing and scholarly studies focus on archetypal psychology, feminist studies, and the western astrological tradition. Safron leads a Joseph Campbell Foundation® Mythological RoundTable Group at Opus and Pacifica and loves accompanying people through Campbell’s amazing work.


spacer Jennifer Selig, Ph.D., is Core Faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute, serving as Chair of Hybrid Programs, which include Depth Psychology with an Emphasis in Jungian and Archetypal Studies, and Engaged Humanities and the Creative Life.  She did her doctoral work at Pacifica as well, drawn to the school like so many before her when she learned that Joseph Campbell's library was housed on campus. She has taught for 22 years, and considers herself blessed to have been teaching mythology and depth psychology for the last decade, as they have been life-long passions.


spacer Dennis Patrick Slattery, Ph.D., is Core Faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute in the Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology Programs. Honored as Distinguished Professor in 2007, Dr. Slattery is an author of over 200 articles and book reviews, as well as the author or co-editor of 15 books. He currently teaches a course on Joseph Campbell.


spacer Evans Lansing Smith, Ph.D., is Core Faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute and Co-Chair of the Mythological Studies Program. He is the author of nine books and numerous articles about mythology and comparative literature, with special interests in the Arthurian romances and alchemy. Dr. Smith studied and travelled with Joseph Campbell.


General Information

Application and Cancellation
Space is limited to 42 participants.
To apply for program, complete the form and submit along with one paragraph telling us about yourself and a second paragraph telling us about your interest in participating in this program. Following review and evaluation of applications, enrollment invitations will be sent to those who are admitted to the course. Payment for registration fees will be processed at that time. A confirmation email with further instructions regarding participation will be sent after registration is complete.

To obtain a refund on your registration fee, send a written cancellation request postmarked no later than 15 days before the beginning of the program. Tuition less a $50 processing fee will be refunded. No refunds on your registration fee will be made after that time. In the event that the program is sold out with a waitlist, if we are able to transfer your registration to someone on the wait list, we will issue you a refund less the processing fee.

Scholarships
A limited number of partial scholarships are available to those who find it prohibitive to pay the full cost of the online program. To apply for a scholarship, email a letter of request to publicprograms@pacifica.edu with your application and payment. Please be specific regarding your financial circumstances. If accepted, you will be contacted to approve processing payment.

Continuing Education Credit
12 hours of continuing education credit is available for RNs through the California Board of Registered Nurses (provider #CEP 7177), for MFTs and LCSWs (provider #PCE 2278) through the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, and for National Certified Counselors (provider #5436), through the National Board of Certified Counselors. Pacifica adheres to NBCC continuing education guidelines. A $15 processing fee will be charged for each certificate requested.   

Technology Requirements for this Course
This program is taught using Pacifica's Online Learning Management System, Desire2Learn (D2L), utilized in some of Pacifica's graduate programs. D2L works best using the Mozilla Firefox browser, however the following browsers are supported: Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9 and Safari 4, 5 and the latest version of Chrome. Participants will need a Broadband Internet connection. The software needed to view the video presentations is Adobe Flash Player. To download the latest version of this application, visit get.adobe.com/flashplayer. Participants also need to ensure that pop-up blockers are turned off.
