Mexico City
Mexico, with a population of around 98 million people, has Spanish as its official language. Mexico City, often referred to as the City of Palaces, is a modern, cosmopolitan city surrounded by volcanic mountains. It has an architectural legacy from the different cultures that inhabited the city during many centuries, including Mayan remains such as Templo Mayor (The Great Temple). But throughout the city, achitectural styles of the baroque and neoclassical have been fused with indigenous styles to create a unique architectural look. Modern buildings in the Polanco, Anzures, Del Valle and Santa Fe districts add further interest and you can stroll avenues like Avenida Insurgentes for entertainment, restaurants and nightlife. Mexican culture, in all its different manifestations, can be admired at the large number of quality museums, including the National Museum of Anthropology, the Franz Mayer Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Frida Kahlo Museum.
Be sure to get out of the city to the mountains in the south and west to enjoy cuisine such as quesadillas (melted cheese in tortillas) from the food stalls, and the distinctive natural environment on show in the National Parks and Ecological Reserves.
