About The Food
When I was fourteen, I decided to defy the codes of my family and of my community. I stopped eating meat. With a splash of age, a sprinkle of food documentaries, a dash of books about the food industry, and a bushel of life experiences, vegetarian and vegan food went from being something I approached rather nonchalantly to becoming a way of life. I started comowater.com to share information and to share my meatless meals, to dialogue with people who approach food from perspectives that may be similar to or very different from my own, and to showcase what I cook on average nights and on special occasions. This site is not about conversion or pushing an agenda. Instead, I hope that folks–vegetarians, vegans, flexitarians, pescatarians, and carnivores alike–come to comowater.com to be inspired to make their own vegan and vegetarian cuisine prepared with passion and love.
Why Como Water?
Published by Laura Esquivel in 1989 and later made into a film in 1992, ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ (‘Como Agua Para Chocolate’) is a tragic love story that uses magical realism to tell the story of Tita. Because Tita was her family’s youngest daughter, she was forced by tradition to live at home and to take care of her mother until her mother’s death. This tradition would keep Tita from marrying Pedro–the love of her life. When Pedro marries Tita’s sister and moves into the family home, Tita is tortured by having Pedro so close, yet completely unattainable. Full of emotion, Tita’s only release was to cook. Through kneading, chopping, stirring, basting, slicing, baking, boiling, frying, braising, shucking, grinding, soaking, whisking, whipping and steaming, Tita’s food embodied her feelings–sometimes melancholic, other times full of lust, pain, joy and contentment. When thinking of a name for this blog, I didn’t need to think very hard. The story of Tita’s relationship with her dishes symbolizes my approach to culinary expression. Like Tita, food is my medium–the pan, the pot, the plate, my canvas. If you haven’t seen the movie or read the book, you should. The story is amazing.
About Me
Psychologist by day; dancer, painter, writer, indie movie watcher by night. I heart numbers, revolutionary memoirs, my Tai-chi-yogalates class, old school hip hop, Marisa Monte, and quantum physics. But preparing, sharing, and consuming food are my true favorite past times. Born and raised in Springfield, MA, my schooling took me to Boston and then to Michigan, and now I reside in North Carolina Washington DC, where the local food and friendly folks are rocking my world. Over the past decade, my work (and play!) has taken me throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa. My food mimics the colors and passion of my two favorite cities–Salvador (Brasil) and Paris. If I had to be a fruit, I’d be a mango; if I had to be a vegetable, I’d be a Brussels sprout; and if I had to be an animal, I’d be a lioness. If I had to eat only one thing for the rest of my life, it’d be yellow rice and gandules.

i came to your site from natalie’s blog.
your story of converting to vegetarian food at the age of 14 is very much similar with mine. i also rebelled with my family at the age of 14 and stopped eating white meat.
it was difficult for me to be a vegetarian as relatives, friends, office acquaintances would ridicule and laugh at me thinking i was cuckoo, eating veg food… just leaves and grasses…
nevertheless, i persisted being a vegetarian and am glad that i listened to my inner voice and sensitivity.
