Backstage with Bok Bok

Bok Bok is a name you need to get to know if you haven’t come across it already. Besides producing, DJ-ing, designing, putting on nights in London, he is a top bloke and enjoys his cactus once in a while. Reason alone to take the man backstage and ask him a few silly questions.

1. It’s your first gig in a series of 3 in 2 days. Do you: A. Do the sensible thing (pick up your records after you’ve finished, finish the beer and head for the hotel) or B. Get gently pushed out the venue an hour after closing time having lost your records, hat, jacket, phone. Elaborate answer please.

Ok firstly I have LOST too much shit over time and I’m done losing stuff now even if I’m kinda crunked or whatever. I’m kina OCD when it comes to that stuff nowadays!
I’m somewhere in the middle of these two scenarios! Hotels SUCK and are boring so the best situation is if someone has a nice setup back at their place, have a little mix / private party.

2. We’re backstage, open bar, anything goes. Fjork the promoter is from Iceland and you need to get her drunk, please provide the poison list you will use to get the job done.

HAHAHA what is this customs? Shall I empty my pockets? Whiskey and green should do the job, though I dunno about this Fjork character. Kinda tempted to go check out some local sights right about now!

3. You’re playing to a hype crowd and at 2:35 when you’re about to drop your biggest record Calvin Harris walks up and asks to play a few records. What do you do?

I’d be like ‘Sup Calvin but

I’m not sure he’d make such a good b2b partner but who knows maybe he’s sitting on some VIP dubplate mixes of that tune he did with Rascal that aren’t completely shite.

4. The line-up for the next Night Slugs looks serius (2562, Claro Intelecto, Jackmaster, Untold, etc.) Who would you like to play at a Night Slugs Festival?

If there was a Night Slugs festival I’d love to bring the greats – DJ Deeon, Slugo, Kenny Dope, EZ, Slimzee, DJ Gregory, Kode 9, DJ Cleo, Wizzbit, Wiley if he DJed, uh… Prince? Herbie Hancock?? Sun Ra (in person)???

5. Boomkat was all over your recent release with L-Vis. What’s next for the duo?

Haaa yeah man! We’ll we’re keeping busy both playing a lot of shows and doing the club nights in London pretty regularly. We’ll be touring the US in November.
Also Night Slugs will be launching as a label in late November, with our first release lined up from the man like Mosca, which we’re very hyped about.

Download this lovely mix from duo infernale Bok Bok and L-VIS 1990, it’s their debut on Rinse.Fm! (keep trying if the d/l doesn’t start, their server is, er, rinsed)

Get your Night Slugs EP from Boomkat and watch out for Night Slugs the label!

Backstage with: Scratcha DVA

Backstage with… is a new category I inaugurate today. It’s just me asking various artists some really dumb questions because all the other serious blogs deal with the more salient issues like gear, frequencies and VSTs. It’s raw and uncut and you need to get to know!

Scratcha DVA should be no stranger to fans of London’s premier underground station Rinse FM. He’s the voice behind the Grimey Breakfast Show and he’s a badman producer who’s unleashed some of grime’s anthems like the seminal Nasty Nast Nasty, Bullet A Go Fly and Kill All A Dem. We can chat all you want about the man’s grime, but it’s the Funky bits that he’s getting a lot of deserved praise for these days! I caught up with him for a series of silly questions, so there we go:

1. Crackhouse, Powerhouse, Funkstep. Where did all this come from?

Crack House is somefing Zinc has been working on for a while, I like it a lot but I heard you have to smoke an ounce of crack before he considers bringin u in.
Yeah Power House is a series of free mix cds and downloads I do with diffrent types of House on. I will be mixing Vol4 soon. Funkstep WAS the name of Roskas new album.

2. Which CDs would you really miss if I came round and CLEARED! your CD rack?

Bruv! I know what that’s like. My ex disposed of all my music once. Dubplates an evrything.
If u done a Tempa T in my house I would most miss my classic Brandy album or my Foreign Exchange album.

3. What would everyone wear if it was up to you to decide a Rinse HQ dress code?

I would make evryone wear boob tubes, Tu tu’s and wet look leggings. Especially Marcus Nasty and Geeneus to bring out there feminine side abit more.

4. Top 5 specs on the market right now?

BRUV! I’ve found a new shop for specs. So watch dis space. But the 1s on Calvin Harris’s album cover I still can’t find and Rhiannas black ones. They’re sick!

5. When’s the Natty riddim out and what’s on the flip may I ask?

Natty will hopefully be out on Hyperdub Dec/Jan. Problem is my G5 blew up so I’m struggling to get a b side finished and even finishing the final mix of Natty. Kode gave me a deadline which actually ends in 2days. Oh shit!

Look out for Scratcha DVA -- The Jelly Roll EP out on DVA Music.
