About Us
STRIVE was founded in Allentown PA in 1995 by SaLisa Lynn Berrien with the assistance of Kelly Reed and Donahue Scott to offer innovative and effective programs to improve academic outcomes for At-Risk youth. The program’s focus is to assist students in the adjustment of high school life by providing leadership training to prepare students for a life of leadership, academic support services to address academic deficiencies, cultural enrichment to enhance diversity awareness, and coaching services to assist in life planning.
STRIVE Inc. exists as an incorporated organization of its members. The State of Pennsylvania certified its “Articles of Incorporation” in May of 2003. The Internal Revenue Service determined that STRIVE is an exempt organization from Federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
STRIVE Inc. is a leadership development organization for youth in eighth through twelfth grades. It is an organization whose primary purpose is to support and encourage children and youth to strive for excellence in all areas of their lives. STRIVE Inc. is essential because historically, at-risk children and youth have not had the opportunity to be exposed to the many positive facets of the community and society at large that is needed to develop the whole person.
STRIVE exists, in part, to provide a ground-breaking start to deserving youth. At-risk young people, in most cases, did not put themselves in this category. In many cases, it was the behavior of someone else. STRIVE believes that at-risk youth can play a critical role in the positive change of their lives by having a simple desire to excel. Despite the obvious difficulties, many young people are looking for a way out of their current situation and hoping for a better life. STRIVE staff devotes most of their time to the care and nurturing of young persons unlimited potential. The STRIVE staff serve as advocates for young people and encourages the spirit of community activism within its membership. STRIVE Inc. does not discriminate and all those who support the mission of STRIVE are welcome to join regardless of sex, race, religion, creed, socioeconomic or employment status.
STRIVE Inc. seeks to develop young people through education enhancement services and positive exposure. This is accomplished through tutoring, mentoring, personal development, community development, leadership exposure and academic development programs. The program operates on local college campuses in the Lehigh Valley.
